Lesson 1. The two great drivers of globalisation are trade and investment. In the case of trade, take note of next weeks manifestations as the World Trade Organisation meets in Cancun, Mexico. Here in Ireland, this week marks a return of globalisations co-pilot. With the summer holidays over, Investment in the form of education, returns to the classroom. Offering the gift apple of 'giving something back to the community', big business in Irish schools wants the teacher as pet and access to a young captive audience. read full story / add a comment

The Iraqi Women's League in the UK has asked the Global Women's Strike in Ireland to publicise their letter to the then International Development Secretary, Clare Short. She said she would meet with them but then never followed up. Her successor has still not responded........... Dear Clare Short We are writing to ask for an urgent meeting to raise a number of issues with you. We are a group of Iraqi women in exile who have come together at the initiative of the Iraqi Women’s League (IWL). IWL started in 1952 in Iraq and has been active in the UK since 1979 providing support and practical help to Iraqi women in exile. Many of us have family in Iraq. Until the start of the war we were in daily contact but now the telephone lines are down and we don’t know what is happening. We are desperately worried about their safety read full story / add a comment

Todays Indo.Poll suggests that 54% of irish now favour the US use of Shannon. Lies, damn lies and statistics,no doubt. however this does beg the question[s] Are we a nation of hyprocrites, who will fence sit untill we are assured of the winning side.then jump down on the victory band wagon, with a:"Ah Shure we yiz BEHIND yiz all de way.Tanks for doin de dority work .now is dere any chance of us sellin dem Iraqui fellahs some beef, like we did before? An could we git a few of dem green cards agin?" Or are we worried that our jobs in big ,evil American ,multi nationals might be going soon and it is best to keep the overpriced, car, house, and generally[supposedly] good life, than any political morals[asif There was such a thing] Or was the whole anti US thing here in Ireland just a frog that pretended to be an ox? read full story / add a comment

America's $400bn war bill The US is spending more on this war than it raises in taxes, paving the way for a nasty surprise for its taxpayers, writes Randeep Ramesh Thursday March 20, 2003 War costs, but it is unclear who will pick up the tab. George Bush is not financing this campaign through taxation. Instead the president is cutting taxes - sending a welfare cheque to the wealthy - and raising military spending. The slowdown in the American economy has seen many states, who have to balance their budgets, cut back on social spending. The White House made it clear that there would be no federal bail out for these programmes. The president is reheating Reaganomics - cutting back on welfare, overcompensating with defence spending and offering big tax cuts to the rich at the expense of the poor. read full story / add a comment
