The BBC's Director of Comedy wants to "save the sitcom". But the sitcom is only endangered because most of them stopped being funny. As To the Manor Born reminds us, British comedy has lost its class, says Finlay McLaren.

We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

It's bad enough that all UK TV users are forced to fund the BBC via a TV licence. But it's worse than that, says Charlotte Gill: millions of pounds of taxpayers' money are handed to the corporation via backdoor channels.

disgraceful scenes outside Leinster House

RTE TV footage this evening showed John O'Donohue being mobbed by an angry crowd as he left Leinster House. A senator was hit by a paintbomb on the shoulder as he spoke to the media.

Can you imagine what would happen to a person if they hit Saddam Hussein with a paint bomb? Do you think they would live for more than ten seconds?

Compare that to our democracy where the offender was arrested and RELEASED a few minutes later.

Once again, so called peace protestors have continued to let us down, just as they have repeatedly done in Shannon. This kind of activity looses support, but they rarely understand that.

Thank god we live in a democracy, and thank god we have brave men and women who defend that priviledge (I am thinking in particular of those Irish men in the RIR and presently in Kuwait).

It's frustration on the part of protesters that the governement has not listened to the people and violated the constitution by particapiting in this illegal invasion of iraq.

a war, as commonly used is a slight misdescription: the US army is the most equipped and professional army that the world has ever seen. It's ecomomic and intelligence backing is unprecidented, along with it's propaganda pr machine. the iraqi's haven't a hope.

how can we let our government drag us into this mess?? the swiss have withdrawn the use of it's facilities to the US. can we not?

the government didn't listen to the people when they rejected the nice treaty, the government has again not listened to the people and juggled legal semantics to justify the use of shannon.
let's be serious, if the US were forced to pull out of shannon they'd fly to britain or germany, it's not a big deal. but it's a matter of principle.

the new american project for the 21st century sums what this is all about- "full spectrum dominance". this is wrong and a new world order is in the making. what ireland's function?
cheap labour/brain drain.

hydrogen economy, and realignement with europe.
haughey's posturing sums it all up: our moral position can be outbid.

regime change at home, if only.

If one looks up democracy in any dictionary they will see one of its definitions as 'social equality'. Therefore how can one claim that we in Ireland live in a democracy, when the gulf between rich and poor has increased even when the country or should I say corrupt government have recently enjoyed unprecendented economic fruits! Ireland is a democracy in name only. People over profit, NO TO WAR!

Democracy /duh-mock-rah-see/ n. 1. A form of government in which the rich control the media and are elected upon non-enforceable promises. 2. Any dictatorship that ships raw materials cheap to the United States of America. 3. A jingoistic buzzword used in late C20 and early C21 discourse [arch., off., obsc.]

The Government was democratically elected by the people of Ireland

The position as outlined by an Taoiseach was clear.

1. The Government does not support the war in the absence of the 18th resolution.

2. The Government recognizes the best way to solve the issue is through the UN.

3. The Government will continue to extend flight facilities to the US and other countries as it has done for over 50 years.

It is simple; your are only interested in turning the issue into a political foot ball.

Non violent direct action has failed. The Dail does not represent the will of the people of this country. There is no democracy in Ireland. Will someone bomb us please? The time for violent mass civil disobedience has arrived.
