I happen to know a thing or two about masks and safety. Why? Because for 25 years I was the editor of an award-winning trade magazine called HazMat Management that covered such topics as pollution prevention and compliance with health & safety laws. For years, a number of Irish movements have stood in solidarity with the struggle for justice, dignity, equality and freedom of the popular movements in Colombia. Now, hearing of the case of political persecution against the Water Rights movement, Colombian organisation have expressed their solidarity with the struggle of the Irish people. Peasant organisations of Cauca Valley and a broad coalition of over 50 organisations of indigenous, Afros, peasants, women and workers from the Southern jungle of Putumayo, together with refugees in Europe, have issued two statement expressing their unconditional support with those who struggle and reminding the government of Ireland of their obligation to respect the rights of the people in Ireland. read full story / add a comment

Guth Gafa International Documentary Film Festival Guth Gafa (meaning ‘captive voice’) is Ireland’s only independent documentary film festival. We focus on showcasing the latest award-winning International and Irish documentary films on thought-provoking subjects, and promoting the art of great story-telling, through film, to rural Irish communities. The festival returns this year in not one, but two magical locations, in Counties Donegal and Meath. It will get underway on Saturday, October 25th and Sunday October 26th in the unspoilt 17th century village of Malin, Co Donegal, its spiritual home. Over the following weekend, November 1st and 2nd, it will move to the magnificent and tranquil grounds of the 18th century Headfort House, a hidden gem close to the historic village of Kells in Co Meath. The objective of bringing a second location to the festival is about creating opportunities for as wide an audience as possible to see human rights and social issue documentary films. Documentaries screened arouse great debate and discussion, and Guth Gafa’s trademark of inviting all filmmakers to present their films and discuss them with the audiences, makes the festival a unique experience for film lovers. There are few film festivals in Europe quite like Guth Gafa. Every year, the festival brings an intimate but intense hotbed of documentary film to Ireland. With family screenings and workshops running in parallel, the 8th Guth Gafa promises to be another great festival. Press Release - Woodland League The public amenity forest at Gougane Barra, co Cork has been clear-felled for no good reason. This is the claim of an internationally renowned Irish tree-scientist and a number of Irish NGOs. In January 2014, Coillte, the Irish Forestry Board, contended that ‘sudden oak-death’ (Phytophtera ramorum) had infested the veteran larch trees in the forest and that urgent clear-felling was essential. Documentary evidence purporting to support this assertion dated July 2013 has been branded tenuous at best by Diana Beresford-Kroeger the renowned Irish tree-scientist who saw no sign of the disease while filming in the forest in August of that year. read full story / add a comment

On November 19th the Tánaiste (Vice-Prime Minister in Ireland) Eamon Gilmore, addressed the parliamentary questions raised by TDs Maureen O’Sullivan, Clare Daly and Seán Crowe, in relation to growing concerns about the escalation of political repression in Colombia. In recent months, scores of left-wing activists, trade union organisers, protesters and human rights’ defenders have been murdered. Over the last couple of days we have witnessed massive media hysteria about the case of Maria, a young girl supposedly abducted by a Roma couple in Greece. DNA tests and Lombroso-style racial profiling [1] have come into action in a case that has stirred the irrational anxiety that feeds racism and bigotry. Beyond the fact that child abduction is a serious issue, the "whiteness" and "blondeness" of the alleged victim have been emphasised together with the "Roma" condition of the alleged culprits. Let us remember that this is taking place in Greece, a country where blatant racism (as expressed by Golden Dawn) is on the rise, so there are good reasons to be cautious about this whole case. read full story / add a comment
