"Surely Parliament will get the chance to vote on the WHO Pandemic Treaty," has been a common refrain. Not according to the Government, which repeatedly refused to assure MPs they would get a say on the binding agreement.

national / eu / news report Thursday January 22, 2009 21:01 by Brian
This article is an attempt to articulate a view that our EU, and particularly Monetary Union, membership has not been beneficial - and in fact ruinous - with respect to the current economic crisis. It is hoped by this to answer some of the criticisms of the lisbon No campaign from commentators who claim that the opposite is the case (1).

The National Chairperson of the 32 County Sovereignty Movement Francie Mackey has again highlighted and praised the efforts of all republican , socialist and progressive groups for their contribution to the temporary defeat of the EU Treaty in last Years referendum . However the apparent refusal of the national and intrnational capitalist elites to accept that popular decision and the increasing likelihood of their pushing ahead with a second referendum on the same Treaty in the upcoming year leaves all of us who opposed the Treaty on the grounds of national sovereignty , neutrality and principled socialist concerns with a common purpose . How best to defend Irish democracy and sovereignty from the undemocratic and arrogant mindsets of the powerful who regard such notions as an obstacle to their preferred political , economic and military order ? read full story / add a comment

The letter below was sent recently today to all Irish Deputies (MPs) and Senators in connection with the proposal to re-run the lisbon Referendum in order to get a different result.

It is accompanied by copies of the two submissions made to the Oireachtas (the Irish National Parliament) Sub-Committee on Ireland's Future in the EU by Anthony Coughlan on behalf of the National Platform Research and Information Centre, of which Coughlan is Secretary. read full story / add a comment

Interesting head to head poll in the Times today- Mary Lou McDonald explains that is the same dinner, warmed up and stuck on a different plate, while Dick Roche tries to tell us that all Irish concerns have been met.

But we didn't vote just as self-interested Irish people Dick, we voted as good Europeans. We want the best for Europe -which doesn't mean writing a blank cheque to the arms industry. read full story / add a comment

The last vestiges of Fianna Fail and this ramshackle coalition government pretense of "listening" to the people and protecting the vital interest of the Irish people and the sovereignty of our country have finally been exposed. For Fianna Fail to declare that they have secure the concerns of the Irish people by a few meaningless declarations is nothing but a sham. read full story / add a comment

Much has been said over the lisbon Treaty and the future direction of Europe under the heel of the emerging “European Soviet” (Reference to the EU by M. Gorbachev, London 2001). Yet there is little in the way of real debate on the more informative topics of nationhood, sovereignty and “que bono” (who benefits). This article sets out to stimulate such questions. The text of an informative Lecture called “The State of Individuals” by one of Americas most worthy Political Historians is provided for discussion. read full story / add a comment

Brian Crowley MEP: With all respect, Mr. President, you will not tell me what the Irish think. As an Irishman, I know it best.
President Vaclav Klaus: I do not speculate about what the Irish think. I state the only measurable data which were proved by the referendum...
... If Mr. Crowley speaks of an insult to the Irish people, then I must say that the biggest insult to the Irish people is not to accept the result of the Irish referendum. In Ireland I met somebody who represents a majority in his country. You, Mr. Crowley, represent a view which is in minority in Ireland. That is a tangible result of the referendum. read full story / add a comment

The Socialist Party has been in discussion with others on the left with a view to forming an Electoral Alliance for the Local Elections which will take place in June 2009. These discussions have been publicly carried in the pages of our paper "the Socialist" and on sites such as this. The Socialist Party has put forward a very positive proposal for a local election slate of candidates. It is important the slate would field credible candiates with a record in the their area that there is political agreement with the programme of the slate which will flow from discussions. We feel these issues among others mentioned in the material below are extremley important if we are to get aggreement. This is why in these proposals we have provided fuller elaboration of our position in an open, honest and constructive manner we hope that other groups will respond in kind. read full story / add a comment
