The Irish Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is sponsoring an invite only Fracking workshop in London this Friday 15th Nov 2013 as part of its long term plan to introduce Fracking in Ireland. It has already commissioned research to help 'determine best practice guidelines to regulate the shale gas industry in Ireland' (all their own words). There is no hint here Fracking will NOT be allowed whatever the findings. This same body though is immune from prosecution under Irish law (See Box 1 below) making a mockery of it's regulatory role. read full story / add a comment

To mark the Global Frackdown day, No Fracking Dublin will be hosting a screening of Gasland Part II.

A documentary that declares the gas industry's portrayal of natural gas as a clean and safe alternative to oil is a myth, and that fracked wells inevitably leak over time, contaminating water and air, hurting families, and endangering the earth's climate with the potent greenhouse gas methane.

The amount of money used to bail out failed banks would have ended world hunger for 50 years. This is the world presided over by G8 leaders who meet every year to co-ordinate how to continue failed policies which favour the 'have yachts' over the 'have nots'. We say 'Another World is Possible' and over five days in June our Festival of Ideas hopes to challenge and inspire those who want to fight for it.

Fracking is so very safe. Full text at url.

A truck carrying drill cuttings from a Fracking site set off a radiation alarm at a landfill in Pennsylvania. Emitting gamma radiation ten times higher than the permitted level, the waste was rejected by the landfill.

After the alarm went off, the MAX Environmental Technologies truck was immediately quarantined and sent back to the Marcellus Shale Fracking site it had come from in Greene County, Va. The 159-acre Pennsylvania landfill site accepts residual and hazardous waste, but the cuttings were too radioactive for the site to safely dispose.

Large areas of Leitrim and Clare are under options licenses for onshore Shale Gas extraction using destructive and invasive technology, including hydraulic fracturing.

What is less well known is that large areas of Sligo, Leitrim and Roscommon are also licensed for Lignite extraction, which in simple terms is Coal Bed Methane/Coal Seam Gasification, with an even greater environmental and human health impact than shale gas extraction. read full story / add a comment
