Troy Davis was sentenced to death in 1991 for the killing of an off-duty Savannah, Georgia policeman. Davis was found “guilty” based on dubious accounts that he confessed to the killing and questionable “eyewitness” identifications that included false eyewitness testimony coerced by the cops. Seven of the prosecution’s nine “eyewitnesses” have since recanted. The only holdouts are one man who may be the actual killer and another who initially denied being able to identify the shooter only to pin it on Davis two years later. Three of the eyewitnesses say their testimony was coerced by the police. New eyewitnesses have come forth identifying another suspect. read full story / add a comment

We never forget our imprisoned comrades. We don’t mystify our respect for them but neither are we indifferent to their everyday experience. Solidarity is not, as has been demonstrated on several occasions, just a beautiful word or a slogan, but a practice inseparable from our struggle. This can be expressed in many diverse ways, and there are moments when an idea takes shape with forcefulness and continuity. Given the delicate situation (in court and in prison) that faces our comrades Juan Aliste Vega, Marcelo Villarroel Sepúlveda, and Freddy Fuentevilla Saa, who are currently held captive in prisons of the Chilean state, several individuals from Buenos Aires have decided to form a new support network in order to provide updates and disseminate information about their situation, as well as hopefully assisting in their return to the streets. read full story / add a comment

Visual Artists Ireland, the All-Ireland representative body for professional visual artists, today announced preliminary findings of their recent survey The Social, Economic & Fiscal Status of the Visual Artist in Ireland 2011. Based on the survey undertaken in December 2008, the 2011 survey has found that the income of professional visual artists in Ireland has collapsed. Of the 292 artists surveyed, 82.25% earn less than €10,000 from their creative practice. This is a sharp decrease when compared to 67% in 2008. The number of artists relying on finding alternative sources of income has increased, but the overall income figures remain low. 55% of professional visual artists earn less than €10,000 from their total income (creative and non-creative). This is a sharp decrease from 33% in the 2008 survey. read full story / add a comment

The next WWAM will take place, as planned, between 23 September and 30 September 2011. The aim is to promote again and again the idea that the production and consumption of animal flesh must be abolished. The idea is to claim loud and clear that it is not only the duty of each individual to stop supporting the murderous exploitation required by the consumption of animal flesh and "by-products", but that it is also, therefore, the duty of societies as a whole to declare themselves for the banning of farming, fishing and hunting. read full story / add a comment

On Thursday last, the 15th September, Shell's private security force, IRMS continued their practice of using force on the public road as they see fit. On Wednesday the 14th of September, concerned individuals wishing to support Teresa Treacy arrived at Clonmore, Tullamore. The following morning the supporters learned that no tree felling would be carried out that week and ESB workers had been instructed to leave the site. On the morning of Saturday the 17th of September, Teresa rang from the prison to say that her spirits had been lifted by the news. She has her own cell in the prison thanks to the good graces of the prison staff. After her initial shock she is settling in. She said she has no intention of 'purging her contempt' and is calling out for support. read full story / add a comment

Iran hangs men for having gay sex. Confirmed by the Iranian news agency ISNA Iran. Full story at Three Iranian men have been executed after being found guilty of charges related to homosexuality, according to a semi-official news agency. The men, only identified by their initials, were hanged on Sunday in the south-western city of Ahvaz, the capital of Iran's Khuzestan province. "The three convicts were sentenced to death based on the articles 108 and 110 of Iran's Islamic penal code, for acts against the sharia law and bad deeds," the Isna agency quoted a judiciary official in Khuzestan as saying. Iran Human Rights, an independent NGO based in Norway, said the men were charged with "lavat" – sexual intercourse between two men. It is not clear whether the three men were homosexuals or merely smeared with homosexualityaccused of being gay. read full story / add a comment |
