Dublin is the first city in Ireland to embrace the spirit of the global campaign of Earth Hour 2008. The Lord Mayor of Dublin, Cllr Paddy Bourke (Labour) has been instrumental in gaining the support of city council representatives to endorse the campaign. Speaking about the Earth Hour campaign he said “I am thrilled that as Dublin Lord Mayor, I will be leading our capital city in its I would urge businesses and homes to join in and take part in the campaign.”, this campaign is important and everyone from citizens up to Government has a duty to do what they can against global warming. It is up to us all to do what we can to reduce our CO2 emissions. Through one simple action, turning off our lights for an hour, we can deliver a powerful message about the need for action.” read full story / add a comment

Fur Free campaigners in Donegal Town will demand an end to Irish fur farms this Saturday. With a Hugh visual display of caged animals, Large Banners, Posters, and Leaflets, activists will highlight the horrible suffering found on fur farms. The fur industry is one of the cruelest industries in the world. Unfortunately, Minister Mary Coughlan has allowed County Donegal to become known as the fur farm capital of Ireland. Donegal has this reputation for three reasons; 1) County Donegal has more fur farms than any other county in Ireland; 2) The Irish Fur Breeders Association is in County Donegal; 3) The constituency of the Agriculture minister, Mary Coughlan is in Donegal. It is Minister Coughlan who gives the licences to the fur farmers each year. The Minister of Agriculture has the most say on whether or not fur farming will continue in Ireland read full story / add a comment ![]()

Last year, the EU Constitution was defeated in referendums in France and the Netherlands. Europe’s governments quickly got together and rewrote the constitution as an incredibly complicated list of amendments to existing treaties. Together these amendments make up the “Treaty of Lisbon.” Valery Giscard d’Estaing, the president of the Convention on the Future of Europe which did much of the ground work in drafting the constitution, has concluded that “the difference between the original Constitution and the present Lisbon Treaty is one of approach, rather than content”. read full story / add a comment ![]()

March 26th sees the first "world document freedom day" celebrated in many states including Ireland to promote & raise awareness for Document Freedom and Open Standards. Irish support comes from the Dundalk Institute of Technology. DkIT is a proposed site of OOoCon2008 as well. So, if you're into the idea of an open standard which allows you produce, open and alter documents using open source software across platforms then you should go to Dundalk & get a t-shirt. Apparantly they've been sent loads. They may even have umbrellas too. If you're against this, you can always boycott Dundalk and campaign against it hosting the OocCon2008 event. Either way you ought learn a bit more about the campaign. read full story / add a comment

The I.T Newswire is full of Information on the attendance of Mary Hanafin TD at the INTO Conference. headlines emerging discuss the secularisation of the Primary School System (only the religious would put up with the degradation that seems obvious to most parents..) and the ongoing 'reform'of the sector. I though that our 'Multi-culturalism' was strictly of White-eastern Europeans and bi-lingual Polish community, given the fight that many Nigerian parents have had to put up to have their kids access health and education services. Ms Hanafin did not dissapoint, her speech is accessible to download at:- http://www.into.ie/ROI , it is currently unavailable on http://www.education.ie (Department of Education and Science) read full story / add a comment

Over the last few years, blogs and blogging have started to permeate the mainstream in Ireland. Features on bloggers and blogging have started to appear with increasing frequency in weekend newspapers. However, in comparison to the US, where blogs have become an integral part of political organising, blogs are very much still seen as marginal by the Irish political establishment.
Left wing political blogs have until recently been particularly thin on the ground. However, this has started to change, with the emergence of a number of increasingly popular blogs written from an explicitly left-wing point of view. Last month, some of these bloggers came together to establish the Irish Left Review, as an online magazine to help further disseminate left wing views in Ireland. This article presents an interview with Donagh Brennan of dublinopinion.com,one of the founders and current editor of Irish Left Review, about blogging and the origins of this project. read full story / add a comment

The old adage ‘You can fool some people some times, but you can’t fool all the people all the time’ comes to mind when summing up Provisional Sinn Fein’s ‘grass roots’. At what point will they stop being fooled and maybe step back and question the honesty and integrity of their party leader Gerry Adams ? Having once been a supporter and admirer of Adams I now find it difficult to listen to him. He was interviewed by Ursula Halligan on TV3’s The Political Party on Sunday, March 2nd . I have not read any comments regarding this interview on any of the usual sites where this might be debated or discussed. The first part of the interview was taken up with how Sinn Fein got it so wrong in the 26 counties Elections and what direction they where now taking etc etc. Ursula then went on to ask Adams………… read full story / add a comment |
