Prisoners are only allowed to wear the lilies - a symbol of the 1916 Rising - in their cells. The relatives of some prisoners claimed that a work to rule by staff, had also affected conditions in the jail. Geraldine Taylor from Republican Sinn Fein in Belfast said: "They just decided enough is enough, which we totally agree with and they're not going to take it lying down any longer. "That was really the reason because they're locked up for 23 hours. During that period they don't get fed, they don't get water, they don't get using the showers, they don't get out for exercise or anything else. Sinn Féin have called for the immediate release of Rossport Fisherman Pat O' Donnell who is currently serving a sentence in Castlereagh prison. The call was made in the aftermath of a visit to Mr O Donnell by a Sinn Féin delegation made up of Martin Ferris T.D. Cllr. Gerry Murray, Cllr Rose Conway-Walsh and Cllr Thérèse Ruane. The “public service deal” is historic betrayal of public service union members by ICTU and its Public Services Negotiating Committee of general secretaries.The National Public Services Alliance calls on the elected national executives of individual unions to reject these destructive proposals without ballot where rules permit.
