Squatting is on the rise again in these times of austerity (see for example the recent occupations of flats in Southern Spain, mostly carried out by housewives and families). An Italian project that’s caught my attention since its beginning is in Pisa, where last year’s Occupy protests evolved into the reappropriation and transformation of abandoned buildings for the benefit of the local community. read full story / add a comment

We will assemble at 1pm at the entrance to the Riverside Estate on the Tuam Road Galway. This is a response to a deeply political raid by Garda Special Branch on the home of Niall Farrell, GAAW's PRO, on Thursday morning. This morning Gardai searched the home of Galway Alliance Against War (GAAW) PRO, Niall Farrell, in relation to a peaceful act of sabotage on a US troop transporter at Shannon on the morning of 20th December 2011. At the time GAAW had received a handwritten communication from one of the members of the Peace Team involved in the action, and it would seem that this was the basis for the Gardai’s search. read full story / add a comment

Aboriginal elders from Wiluna in central Western Australia have slammed the approval of a nearby future uranium mine by the state’s Environmental Protection Authority (EPA). It now appears only a matter of time for the state government to endorse the EPA decision. The go-ahead is for the Toro Energy company's proposal to develop the first uranium mine in Western Australia 30 kilometres from Wiluna. Wiluna local and senior law man, Glen Cooke, criticised the consultation process that led to the EPA approval. Mr Cooke wants a meeting with state and federal ministers to fight for the safety and rights of his people. read full story / add a comment

Over the course of the last number of weeks every household in the Twenty-Six Counties has received an 'information' booklet from the Referendum Commission. An ethical approach to human rights, development and globalization to replace neo liberalism has support from a distinguished New Zealander which could open the door to its debate by the establishment which has always steadfastly refused to discuss the many human rights omissions from NZ's human rights law. The ethical approach requires that all have, at the very least, the core minimums of the rights in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights i.e. both 'survival rights' and 'self-help rights' sufficient to enable the individual to reach his/her full potential while also exercising a duty to the community. It emphasizes a 'bottom-up' approach to development to take society forward which promises to considerably reduce unemployment. Deprived of signs and art materials, the good people of Occupy Galway came into possession of some chalk. Chalk of every colour is used by children in towns and villages across the country every day to draw the likes of hopscotch boards, noughts and crosses or just idly scribble away a sunny afternoon. It is also used by buskers in cities around the world, who draw fabulous pictures for passers-by to enjoy. One of the joys of chalk that is appreciated by Occupiers is that it causes no damage and is efficiently removed by mother nature in our frequent downpours. It was in this spirit that we began to decorate the grey stone substation that was the back wall of our office before the destruction of the camp. Familiar slogans like “No To Austerity” and “IMF OUT” as well as more pertinent messages like “Constitutional Rights and Due Process R.I.P. Oct. 15-May 16”, began to appear. The grey and featureless substation soon became a monument to freedom of expression, as the many participants joined in the decoration. read full story / add a comment
