While media attention has bee heaped upon Wiki-Leaks, one person has been largely forgotten: Bradley Manning. Private Bradley Manning has been accused of previously supplying information to Wikileaks and is under suspicion of providing the documents which have been released. Bradley is now held in isolation from the outside world, in military detention in Kuwait. Bradley faces, for his alleged actions, up to 52 years imprisonment. Here are two articles regarding Bradley. Jim Moody writes on the release of Iranian film maker Jafar Panahi and uses it to illustrate how international solidarity works. Rest of story at link below. On Tuesday last (May 25), the Iranian regime bowed to growing worldwide pressure over its imprisonment of film director Jafar Panahi and released him on 200 million rials (£14,000) bail. However, he still faces serious charges brought by the regime following gigantic, militant protests over last year’s rigged presidential elections. But at least Iran’s vicious clerics were forced to let Panahi out of the vile Evin prison where he has languished alongside other political prisoners since his arrest in March. Panahi’s release is an encouragement to all those campaigning for democratic rights in Iran in solidarity with its people.... ... read full story / add a comment ![]()

The courts have recently become a very hotly contested arena in the conflict over Shell's imposition of their unsafe project on Erris. Charges and prosecutions have been coming thick and fast over the last year and a half, but they seem to be more about persecuting campaigners than any concept of justice, and recent weeks have shown a clear bias in the policing of protest. ... read full story / add a comment ![]()

According to a notice issued by Eamon Ryan's Department of Transport, work is to re start shortly on the Corrib Pipeline. The notice gives a rough outline of plans to survey the estuary, but makes no mention of Shell/Garda security compounds, increased garda and navy presence, dodgy security guards with cameras, and articles in the O'Reily press saying "we need the gas". Maybe that's a different department... ... read full story / add a comment

A court has upheld the right of a private citizen to film gardaí. A judge found the person filming to acting lawfully and within his rights, and fined the two members of the Garda Siochána who assaulted him to prevent him filming to have acted illegally. They were given small fines, even though they pleaded not guilty and lied to the court about the nature of the assault. There is no law against filming anyone in a public place in Ireland, and that includes the police. If they don't want to be caught on camera doing something, then they shouldn't be doing it. Lastly, can you imagine what the sentence would be for a protester who grabbed a garda and assaulted him to stop him filming? ... read full story / add a comment

Thanks to the SpunOut.ie team, myself and a friend found ourselves with a once in a lifetime opportunity. We had won a competition to see Noam Chomsky speak. The night to see Chomsky came and we were not sure what to expect, having only Chomsky’s Youtube broadcasts as a rough guide. As soon as he begun speaking though, our imaginations started firing. An important study which illustrates the paucity of US media reports of civilian deaths in Iraq. hence it is hardly shocking that US citizens are unaware tof the true extent of civilian casualties. Full story at related link. In February of 2007 Associated Press conducted a survey of 1,002 adults across the United States about their perceptions of the war in Iraq. Whilst the respondents accurately estimated the death toll of U.S. soldiers (the median estimate was 2,974 while the actual toll at the time was 3,100), they grossly underestimated the number of Iraqi civilian casualties (the median answer was 9,890 at a time when several estimates put the toll at least 10 times that number and some as high as 50 times that number). ... read full story / add a comment ![]()

Recent research published in this week's New Scientist and The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, show that 'commons' communities would do a better job of managing forests than state control. Government control generally leads to enclosure (privatisation) and licensing rights for logging, or an expectation that the forest will not last leading to unsustainable exploitation. Carbon storage potential is especially improved when community organisations and their institutions "incorporate local knowledge and decentralized decision making" to "restrict their consumption of forest products". ... read full story / add a comment

Article analysing the results of the referendum and the current crisis in Irish society. Points to the lessons for the left, the dangers of just calling for a no vote and the prospects for struggle. It seems to have become the norm here in Ireland for the government to repeat a referendum when it does not like the result of the first ballot. While farcical, these bullying tactics have a proven record of success. For an establishment intent on getting its own way, ‘no’ never really means ‘no’. ... read full story / add a comment |
