This report outlines how the currency wars now taking place represent another phase in the breakdown of the capitalist system.
Since the huge jolt to the capitalist system back in late 2008, nothing has been fixed and the internal contradictions and conflicts still exist and now the system stumbles forward into new crisis. As Leon Trotsky in the founding program of the Fourth International written in 1938: “The bourgeoisie itself,” he wrote, “sees no way out … it now toboggans with closed eyes toward an economic and military catastrophe.” ... read full story / add a comment

More sickening crimes exposed on the part of US forces in Afghanistan. Full story at link.
Twelve US soldiers have been charged with crimes in Afghanistan ranging from murdering civilians to keeping body parts as war trophies.
The soldiers from the 5th Stryker Brigade, based in Washington State, were deployed to Kandahar province a year ago, and the murders occurred between January and March, according to charges by army prosecutors made public this week.
"Allegations like this are . . . very serious," Pentagon press secretary Geoff Morrell told a news briefing."Clearly, even if these allegations are proved to be untrue, it is unhelpful. It does not help the perceptions of our forces around the world." (Morrell is a master of understatement) ... read full story / add a comment

At 9:30 this morning, people gathered on O'Connell Street In Dublin to protest against the presence of war criminal and ex British prime-minister Tony Blair. Blair arrived at Easons at around 10am for the book-signing of his recent autobiography, escorted and protected by a sizable gardai presence. Despite the heavy rain, hundreds of protestors took part. At least one protester managed to get past the heavy security to try to make a citizens arrest of Blair for his war crimes. ... read full story / add a comment

While media attention has bee heaped upon Wiki-Leaks, one person has been largely forgotten: Bradley Manning. Private Bradley Manning has been accused of previously supplying information to Wikileaks and is under suspicion of providing the documents which have been released. Bradley is now held in isolation from the outside world, in military detention in Kuwait. Bradley faces, for his alleged actions, up to 52 years imprisonment. Here are two articles regarding Bradley. Jim Moody writes on the release of Iranian film maker Jafar Panahi and uses it to illustrate how international solidarity works. Rest of story at link below.
On Tuesday last (May 25), the Iranian regime bowed to growing worldwide pressure over its imprisonment of film director Jafar Panahi and released him on 200 million rials (£14,000) bail. However, he still faces serious charges brought by the regime following gigantic, militant protests over last year’s rigged presidential elections. But at least Iran’s vicious clerics were forced to let Panahi out of the vile Evin prison where he has languished alongside other political prisoners since his arrest in March. Panahi’s release is an encouragement to all those campaigning for democratic rights in Iran in solidarity with its people.... ... read full story / add a comment

The courts have recently become a very hotly contested arena in the conflict over Shell's imposition of their unsafe project on Erris. Charges and prosecutions have been coming thick and fast over the last year and a half, but they seem to be more about persecuting campaigners than any concept of justice, and recent weeks have shown a clear bias in the policing of protest. ... read full story / add a comment

According to a notice issued by Eamon Ryan's Department of Transport, work is to re start shortly on the Corrib Pipeline. A court has upheld the right of a private citizen to film gardaí. A judge found the person filming to acting lawfully and within his rights, and fined the two members of the Garda Siochána who assaulted him to prevent him filming to have acted illegally. They were given small fines, even though they pleaded not guilty and lied to the court about the nature of the assault.
There is no law against filming anyone in a public place in Ireland, and that includes the police. If they don't want to be caught on camera doing something, then they shouldn't be doing it.
Lastly, can you imagine what the sentence would be for a protester who grabbed a garda and assaulted him to stop him filming? ... read full story / add a comment
