repak rolls back on green bins

category dublin | bin tax / household tax / water tax | news report author Thursday December 18, 2003 02:25author by bintaxbasher Report this post to the editors

repak, the business sponsored recycling agency has admitted that it plans to roll back on its policy of supplying green bins to apartment complex's. repak blamed the city council for inadequate funding. this announcement takes place less than two days after the green party voted for an increase in the bin tax on the basis that waste management services would improve. how foolish they now look.

This is sort of expected, because there is no serious effort on behalf of the government, councils and other related bodies to tackle the waste problem in an environmental way.

The whole thing about waste reduction and recycling is largely setup to fail. What we have is tokenism. The real agenda is to ditch all pretense once they can privatise the whole waste industry. Then we will see the rush to incineration. Indeed it is crucial that recycling fails for incineration to be commercially viable.

Repak could WELL AFFORD to pay for these bins. In fact thats waht they are supposed to be there for to provid easy access recycling facilities for ordinary folk

In fact Repak is a scam ! The idea is that shops and businesses dodge their EU requirement to deal with their own packaging by paying protection money.

Its a loophole deliberately written into the waste management act. So the pollutor only pays if they're an ordinary working household - the people who generate the packaging dodge all resoponsibility. As was clearly demonstrated by the anti bin tax campaign when they returned packaging to the crumlin shopping center. The response from Tesco and others was absolutely blatant:

"However, the supermarkets were alerted to the campaign and had placed signs on the doors saying "No litter we pay Repak and don't have to take packaging back."

(from the Irish Examiner)

translation: "fuck off we pay our protection money to dodge EU rules and we'd rather not have attention drawn to it !

Its legal under Irish law but probably illegal under EU law - but who's goona have the cash to take a case !!
