Thursday, 6th November Brid Smith, PRO for the Dublin City Anti-Bin Tax campaign will address a public meeting to be held at 8.15 pm in Java's Coffee House, Abbeygate Street, Galway. Just to add to the press release below, there have been some comments from the media and polticians which imply that people outside Dublin have no problem paying bin-tax, and essentially this has been used to try to guilt trip people in Dublin into paying the tax and to try to whip up bad feeling against the protestors. Cork is re-starting their anti-bin tax campaign, and hopefully we can get something going in Galway. I don't know if this meeting will kick start a campaign or not but at least people will hear some of the arguments. The anti-incinerator group, Galway for a Safe environment has also expressed concerns over bin-tax and pointed out that in Belgium waste charges increased fourfold following the introduction of incineration. |

Jump To Comment: 1 2 3This is an SWP organised meeting. Also, there have been reports in the media of illegal burning. This is partly to do with items which cannot be collected in the bins given. The council are planning to put some sort a system in place for these.
As a galway resident, I have no problem paying a bin tax. The polluter pays, and each household pollutes. I think it's great that most of the city has three bins, only one of which is waste.
I am against an incinerator. I believe any protests should be targeted at the companys and businesses that waste unscrupelously.
Why themn shouldnt thr companies pay? Why do you middle class greens have to put the boot into ordinary people all the time? Why dont you merge with the PDs, yo have a lot in common.
