This process is one of removing what is truly of fundamental importance to capitalism – principally, the way in which it manages its economy – from the realm of an at least partially democratised politics. This is, moreover, not an exclusively European process, but one which is global. As parliamentary institutions have spread following the collapse of authoritarian systems of 'left' and right, they have simultaneously been deprived of a range of powers once considered proper to them. read full story / add a comment

The lisbon Treaty will result in: A big-state power grab; copperfastening Laval; permitting direct EU taxes; exclusive power regarding foreign direct investment, & Court power to harmonise; abolishing right to propose Commissioner; establishing an EU Federal State; requiring citizen loyalty; power to decide our rights; abolishing veto, binding us in 32 new policy areas; reducing National Parliament power; a self-amending treaty; enabling politicians over voters and militarizing EU. the Government is engaged in a cynical exercise of political manipulation. Speaking on behalf of the People’s Movement, which successfully campaigned against ratification of the lisbon Treaty in last year’s referendum, McKenna said “these so-called ‘Legal Guarantees’ on the lisbon Treaty are nothing more than an exercise in creative manipulation designed to mislead the public. This fact was even recognised by the Minister for Foreign Affairs Micheál Martin who after EU foreign ministers met in Luxembourg recently, said, “The impetus from other member states is to be helpful, creative and try to resolve these issues … We are quietly confident and hopeful,” “What the Minister really means is that Legal guarantees on the lisbon Treaty are just a creative way of giving people a feeling of legal certainty which does not and cannot exist.” Said McKenna read full story / add a comment

IFPAL (Irish Friends of Palestine Against lisbon) will hold a protest outside the European Parliament Offices, Molesworth Street, Dublin on Thursday 5th July between 12:30 and 2:30 pm. Seanchas is planned for the 24th to the 26th of July. This 3 day event combines many aspects of sustainable living. Over the weekend workshops will be available, reskilling people in native heritage crafts and practical living skills, as well as educating them on the issues that face us as society today. A politics.ie poster has retrieved the text of a House of Lords debate from Hansard in which Kinnock says the guarantees are not legally binding. The whole yes camp are caught with trousers down by their ankles! Here's what she said: "Those guarantees do not change the lisbon treaty; the European Council conclusions are very clear on them. The lisbon treaty, as debated and decided by our Parliament, will not be changed and, on the basis of these guarantees, Ireland will proceed to have a second referendum in October." She added: "Nothing in the treaty will change and nothing in the guarantees will change the treaty as your Lordships agreed it." read full story / add a comment

The capture by the Israeli navy of the boat "The Spirit of Humanity" in international waters adds piracy to the list of crimes perpetrated by the rogue Zionist state. The boat was bringing a largely symbolic cargo of humanitarian goods to the people of Gaza - medicines, toys, cement for rebuilding of homes destroyed by Israel during its latest murderous assault on Gaza. The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung says the Constitutional Court ruling is demanding a law to guarantee the rights of the German Parliament in the EU decision-making process. If that is so, should not Oireachtas Eireann have a law requiring this too - and Westminster and Paris and Prague and Bucharest, and 22 others? EU politicians cannot change the treaties, or their effects, just by signing a new agreement: the Court of Justice will always say that the provisions of a fully ratified European Treaty trump any attempt to modify the operation of the Treaty through an unratified agreement. read full story / add a comment |
