The Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign (IPSC) today welcomed the government’s refusal to grant Israel Military Industries the contract to supply 10 million bullets to the Irish Defence Forces. The contract for the 5.56 x 45mm rounds, to be bought over a five-year period, has instead gone to Belgian and Brazilian arms manufacturers. Over the past seven months the IPSC had been running a campaign (http://www.ipsc.ie/bullets) against the granting of the contract to any Israeli company, which saw the organisation and its supporters lobbied the government, undertook a letter writing campaign and protested outside the Defence Minister Tony Killeen’s constituency office in Co. This report outlines how the currency wars now taking place represent another phase in the breakdown of the capitalist system.

Since the huge jolt to the capitalist system back in late 2008, nothing has been fixed and the internal contradictions and conflicts still exist and now the system stumbles forward into new crisis. As Leon Trotsky in the founding program of the Fourth International written in 1938: “The bourgeoisie itself,” he wrote, “sees no way out … it now toboggans with closed eyes toward an economic and military catastrophe.” read full story / add a comment

Among the taxation proposals being mooted by government for the next and subsequent budgets is an extension of tax to the lower paid. This is to be accompanied by continued draconian reductions in the provision of health, education and other services required by the population generally and particularly by the poor. Government cuts and impositions on the poor and those on middle incomes who spend most of their income in Ireland will flatten the economy and increase the disastrous levels of unemployment and emigration. read full story / add a comment

Commenting on David Cameron’s recent speech, Martin Óg Meehan of the Republican Network for Unity (RNU) said; “In a few sentences the Tory Leader has confirmed what so many of us have believed since its inception. The path to Irish unity does not exist on the pages of the Good Friday Agreement, in fact it is filled with myths and illusions foisted upon Republicans for 12 years. Those who voiced their concerns on this aspect alone have been the brunt of smear campaigns, intimidation and political policing. read full story / add a comment
