international / worker & community struggles and protests / press release Friday October 15, 2010 17:57 by john throne
the Chilean miners rescue was watched by tens of millions of people worldwide. These workers are now heros internationally for their great collective struggle underground to stay alive. Unfortunately they are now being corralled by the Chilean President and his right wing capitalist allies. Instead these heroic workers should be organized to go on a Chilean wide and world wide tour to organize the unorganized, to oppose the attacks on workers and to put forward the democratic socialist alternative. read full story / add a comment

The mine owners were so greedy for profits they would not put in the proper safety safeguards and this is why the miners were trapped in the first place. The right wing in Chile are trying to exploit the popularity of the miners. see the right wing president at the rescue site. but it was the right wing who supported their hero the dictator Pinochet who slaughtered tens of thousands of union and left activists. if this had not happened the miners union might have been strong enough to enforce safe conditions in the mine and not been trapped in the first place. read full story / add a comment

Inaugural Raymond Crotty Lecture: Ireland in Crisis, Radical Alternatives (Kilkenny, 15th October; Dublin 16 October)
national / anti-capitalism / press release Wednesday October 13, 2010 22:48 by O. O'C.   image 2 images
Raymond Crotty's intellectual significance was recognised outside of Ireland as is evidenced by extracts from reviews of his last book, When Histories Collide, 2001, by Professor Charles Tilly, historian and sociologist, University of Columbia, New York:

"Raymond Crotty has the knack of seeing form the ground up processes that others have viewed from the top down. He had the agronomic and comparative experience to recognize what he was seeing. The result is a fresh, challenging, at times astonishing set of insights into relations between agriculture and civilization."

'Ireland in Crisis, Radical Alternatives', Lecture by Professor Lars Mjřset, University of Oslo, Norway in memory of Raymond Crotty. Butler House, 16 Patrick Street, Kilkenny, 15th October, 7.30 p.m. and Ireland Institute, 27 Pearse Street, Dublin, 16th October at 3.00 p.m.
Both lectures are organised by the People's Movement. read full story / add a comment

On Thursday, September 16th, Joe Gilmartin and Seamus O’Nualláin left Tipperary with a van full of aid to drive 5000 km to Gaza.
Along with others from the north and the UK, they are part of the international VIva Palestina convoy of almost 200 vehicles, $3million of medical aid, and 400 people from 30 different countries, for the people of Gaza.
Having crossed through France, Italy, Greece and Turkey, the latest news is that that the convoy is waiting in Latakia, Syria, to get a ferry to Egypt and then travel into Gaza.
The Egyptian government is currently threatening not to allow them through.

Here is the diary that Joe and Seamus have sent back. To follow their progress go to facebook page “Tipp2Gaza”.

Up to 250 people took part in the 1% Network’s walking tour on Saturday last, October 9th. As people began to gather from as early as 12.30pm it was clear that large numbers were going to to take the opportunity to ‘see how the 1% live.’ The unusually warm weather and low-key Garda presence added to the almost festive atmosphere for this most unusual of political protests. read full story / add a comment
