Teachers from Dublin DEIS schools have welcomed the publication by the Department of education & Skills and the Educational Research Centre of a report which shows that “…the DEIS programme is having a positive effect on tackling educational disadvantage…” and that “…improvement is taking place in the learning achievements of pupils in DEIS primary schools…”

They have called on the Minister for education and Skills, Ruairi Quinn, to announce an immediate reversal of all cuts in the light of this report, and have announced that the planned DEIS schools protest will proceed this Thursday in the absence of such a clear announcement. read full story / add a comment

You don't need to be a financial wizard to recognise that the global economy is struggling. For many businesses, this presents serious challenges to their very survival and sustainability.
However, a Galway-based businessman Geoffrey Canacan has created a unique formula for dealing those challenges that, he claims, can dramatically change results by supporting the individuals within an organisation as they learn to think and act in a more positive and affirming way. read full story / add a comment

We Need To Be the Change that we want, we can complain all day long but that will achieve nothing, we need to take direct action against these bullies, these criminals, if we are too scared to do it for ourselves then we should do it for our children, any parent worth their salt would do whatever it takes to protect their child and that is exactly how we need to see this situation, what are we doing to protect our kids from what is being taken from them now and what will be increasingly taken from them as they grow up? read full story / add a comment

The coming year will be a challenging one for working-class people in Ireland and across Europe. The threats facing us are manifold. Economically people are faced with the consequences of the austerity programme imposed on them by the EU political and financial elite. For Irish Republicans increasing repression highlights the reality of the old imperialism of British rule in Ireland. read full story / add a comment

Ports up and down the West Coast were blockaded, from Seattle to San Diego. The blockade was called in solidarity with longshore workers fighting a union-busting assault in Longview, Washington and port truckers seeking union recognition in the ports of Los Angeles/Long Beach. This support should have been greeted. But now the class war on the West Coast docks is coming to a head, and it can't be waged from the outside. Bay Area labor has called for a caravan to Longview. The goal should be a real occupation of the terminal by the workers to prevent the loading of the scab cargo. Longshore militants have called on the longshore unions to shut down every port on the West Coast, and the East and Gulf Coasts, to smash EGT's union-busting. Can it be done? Yes, but only though sharp struggle against the pro-capitalist labor bureaucracy. read full story / add a comment

The REPUBLICAN NETWORK for UNITY extends New Year’s greetings to our activists and supporters across the thirty-two counties of Ireland and abroad, to all allied Republican organisations or independent Republicans, who work separately from RNU, but on shared principles to achieve our common political objectives, and to all Republicans who today remain faithful to the sovereign and indefeasible right to national freedom enshrined in the 1916 Easter Proclamation. We particularly wish to remember all Irish Republican political prisoners, whether in Maghaberry, or Portlaoise or beyond, and especially their families, who are at all times in our hearts and thoughts but most especially as they endure the pain and hardship of separation from loved ones during the Christmas season and the advent of the New Year. read full story / add a comment

Today was a very honourable day (18-12-11) when here in Dublin in the garden of Remembrance, we commemorated a great revolutionary martyr. An old friend and ally of Ireland and who had been a leading figure in Libya for the past 42 years. A country in where he brought prosperity and stability to the region and also where he opposed with a fiery passion, the efforts made by those who engaged in and tried to legitimise the Imperialist backed coup in Libya led by NATO sponsored mercenaries. read full story / add a comment

Mallojula Koteswara Rao, also known as Kishenji, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Maoist), was killed in a forest area of West Bengal on 24 November.

The authorities claimed that comrade Rao was killed in a firefight during an operation involving some 900 paramilitary troops and state police, including the Cobra commandos specially trained to fight the Maoist-led revolutionary movement based in the rural areas of central and eastern India. A party statement issued the next day said that he had been been arrested, tortured and murdered. read full story / add a comment
