Zero Waste Alliance Ireland, VOICE and An Taisce present:

Low Cost Solutions to Ireland's Waste Crisis

Friday, 21 November 2003, Tailor's Hall, Back Lane Dublin 8

As Ireland looks to the future, solutions to our escalating waste crisis
must be found which are cost effective and safe.

This conference will examine international experience of such solutions and
seeks to place these in the Irish context.

In today's more constrained economic context, valuable lessons can be
learned from international experience to inform decisions about how to
manage our waste in a manner that is sustainable while delivering value for
money. The conference will hear from international experts on both the
practical aspects and broader economic implications of low cost solutions. read full story / add a comment

It is clear from comments made by Martin Cullen yesterday at the launch of his latest campaign to tackle waste that privitisation and incineration are firmly on the Governments agenda. However the amount of waste we produce is clearly at an unacceptably high level. If the people of Ireland do not take more responsibility for our waste by reducing, reusing and recycling we will all lose out in the longer term. read full story / add a comment

Last night Independent TDs put down a motion, supported by the Greens and Sinn Fein, one element of which was to condemn the imprisonment of Joe Higgins and Clare Daly. (Regrettably, as Sinn Fein pointed out it made no mention of other protestors.

The responses from PD Ministers Harney and O'Malley are fascinating, an all out attack on the left, Higgins, the SP, even the shinners. The UCD protests even get a mention from harney.

-There should be no exemptions from the tax for the large polluters.
There have been proposals that the biggest polluters should be exempted from the tax in order to protect their economic position. This would lead to a greater burden on all other economic sectors and consumers. It would both be unfair and lead to higher emissions than would be achieved on a level playing pitch.

-Poorer households must be compensated.
Because poorer households spend a higher percentage of their income on energy than wealthier households, they must be compensated. This should be through changes to the social welfare and tax systems and investment in insulation and other energy efficiency measures.

-Money raised should be used to fund a transfer to a low-carbon economy.
A substantial part of the money raised should be used in a decarbonisation fund, to bring about a rapid change to a more energy-efficient, renewables-based economy. read full story / add a comment

Car Free Day was celebrated in more than 1100 European cities and towns and even some in Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Colombia and Taiwan. Monday 22 September was the first time this 3-year-old event fell on a working day. Whereas most main cities in Europe closed off entire sections of the city, the Dublin City Council closed off no roads this year. To add to this their publicity of the event was so bad that most people were unaware it was Car Free Day. read full story / add a comment

The Greens: Waging Class War On Behalf Of The Rich.

The Green Party stated today that it does not support the position of the Socialist Party on refusing to pay service charges. However, Green Party Leader Trevor Sargent, TD stated, “We support financial incentives and the use of reasonable volume levies to encourage waste minimisation, re-use, recycling and composting for householders and the commercial sector alike.”

This gobbleiegook translates as Green Party support for a flat rate tax. It doesnt matter if you are a bin collecter or Sir Anthony O'Reilly, the Greens want you to pay the same rate of tax read full story / add a comment

On Monday, September 22nd, starting from the Spike/Spire on O’Connell Street at 5pm, Reclaim The Streets and Critical Mass will be holding a “Repaint The Streets” event to mark European Car Free Day. This will involve carrying out much needed improvements, including providing more bike lanes, zebra crossings, warning signs and creative decorations to try to make our drab, dirty and traffic-crowded city streets into a safer, more human and brighter space for us all. read full story / add a comment
