On the morning of Wednesday 7th May Irish multinational CRH will hold their Annual General Meeting in the Royal Marine Hotel, Marine Road, Dun Laoghaire, Co. Dublin. The Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign plan a protest outside the venue. Press reports suggest that CRH are thinking about ditching their toxic Israeli assets which are involved in building the illegal apartheid wall and settlements in Israeli-occupied Palestine. Along with Anto Macaba I recruited Joe Higgins to socialism and Militant/SP. He would later go on to refuse to support my right to appeal against my expulsion from that organization. He put his own position in that organization over principle.

Dun Laoghaire Rathdown (DLR) is facing a housing crisis. As international financial vulture funds descend on Dublin and are forcing up the property prices again as they seek to get a return on their billions because bank interest rates are so low, this has resulted in rents rising where they are now highest in the country. The result has been that now thousands of families are unable to afford the rents as they are being forced up by landlords. In DLR there are over 4,000 families on the housing waiting list. The national figure is 90,000. An emergency protest for housing is taking place outside outside the Town Hall while the council have a housing meeting. read full story / add a comment

Shannonwatch, in conjunction with The Bottom Dog publication, are proud to host a public talk by peace activist, writer and actress Margaretta D'Arcy in the Mechanics Institute, Hartstonge St., Limerick on Thursday May 1st at 7pm.
Margaretta served almost 10 weeks of a three month prison sentence for protesting the use of Shannon Airport by US military, and was only released on March 22. She will talk about her life of activism and the ongoing campaign to rid Shannon of the US military. read full story / add a comment

Opposition to water charges has taken the Direct Action route with residents in a Cork housing estate preventing workers from Irish Water from installing smart meters. Irish Water is the quango that has so far provided over €70 million in setup fees to consultants and various private firms and the government reckons it will cost up to €1,000 million to get it fully run and running. It will then be handed over to the private sector so that they can squeeze hard pressed people for money for the rest of their lives. read full story / add a comment

In a submission to the National Peatlands Strategy, Friends of the Irish Environment have pointed out that total emissions from our bogs are of the same scale as total emissions from the transport sector. However, the authors write that ‘the importance of our peatlands for the climate is not correctly acknowledged by the draft Strategy. As a result the draft Strategy fails to integrate with climate change policy and indeed is in conflict with Ireland's obligations under the UNFCCC.’ read full story / add a comment

The 98th Easter 1916 Commemoration took place in St. Finbarrs Cemetery on Sunday 20th April. As 2014 is the hundred anniversary of the foundational of Cumann na mBan, they were given the honour of carrying the Tri-Colour, with another proudly flying the Cumann na mBan flag in the Colour party. read full story / add a comment

German imperialism was left in an extremely weakened state militarily after world war 2. It depended on US imperialism and its stooges to help it stand against Stalinism. With the collapse of Stalinism it sought peace and friendly relations with the new Russian power. Within this umbrella its economic power flourished. This is now threatened. On Wednesday, 23rd of April The Girl Against Fluoride Team will stage a protest outside the Irish Medicine's Board at Kevin O’Malley House, Earlsfort Centre, Earlsfort Terrace, Dublin 2 from 10am-6pm. The Irish Medicine's Board have never once licensed the water fluoridation chemicals, claiming the water fluoridation policy is a public health measure. If the industrial salmon cages are permitted to be located in Galway , the sea trout and wild salmon are impaired. Evidence adduced by gargan et al show unequivocal evidence of louse infestation on returning fish ( to spawn) to be attributable to the proximity of returning wild fish . Please allow me an opportunity through your site to comment on the interesting I.Green article (31st March 2014) on Garda corruption. While the article deals with a number of cases I will focus on one case in particular, which is less likely to get mentioned during all the present hype into the endless Garda tapes debacle. In my view the case of Michael Mc Kevitt is equally, if not more significant, regarding corrupt activity by some members of the Gardai. Evidently misdemeanours by certain individuals throughout the Mc Kevitt case were endemic. Fearful of the reverberations it is very unlikely that the state would permit the case to be reopened. read full story / add a comment |
