when we finally get a left leaning government and we start really taxing the rich why not use the money wisely and invest it into a renewable energy model that involves Irish people buying shares in the projects and the money raised by the taxes can be used to subsidise the projects. then when we have reached 100% energy production and are exporting our energy we can use the money raised to reverse the austerity measures implemented and improve Irish society as a whole. read full story / add a comment

Since August 25th, 2014, after reports in the mainstream media that the migration office rejected the applications for asylum of 108 refugees, there have been preparations for the eviction of these refugees, who occupied the Oranienplatz in Kreuzberg in the past (and were evicted in early April 2014) but later signed contracts with the Senate of Berlin, which promised them among others places to stay for at least six months and a single case examination of each of their asylum applications. It is known that parts of the agreements mentioned in the contract have been broken already in the beginning, e.g. that some refugees got their applications rejected without the promised single case examination and have been threatened with deportation already before the six months’ period was over. So yesterday the Senate sent officials to the respective refugees to inform them about the rejection of their applications and to order them to immediately leave their homes read full story / add a comment

This is the claim of an internationally renowned Irish tree-scientist and a number of Irish NGOs. In January 2014, Coillte, the Irish Forestry Board, contended that ‘sudden oak-death’ (Phytophtera ramorum) had infested the veteran larch trees in the forest and that urgent clear-felling was essential. Mayo needs to wake up to the reality that the controversial method of extracting natural gas from rock — known as fracking — could soon become a major issue in the county. Too often in these complex times we get just one side of geopolitical events. And a hugely oversimplified colouring book US version depicting who we are supposed to hate and who we are supposed to align with along with emotive reasons for doing so such as "humanitarian aid" or "bringing democracy" or "preventing a massacre by an evil regime" or "weapons of mass destruction" etc etc. A captive media carries this simplistic and cynical message into every home until we are repeating it to each other in the pubs, during coffee breaks at work and on internet chat fora, twitter and facebook. Rarely do we get to hear the alternative to this manufactured consent and cynical propaganda from the other side. Debbie Vincent, long-term animal rights campaigner, comrade, and friend to many within the movement, was sentenced on 17th April to 6 years in prison, after a five-week long trial at Winchester Crown Court. While unconditionally opposing the policies of Zionism and their slaughter in Gaza it is important to look at the tactics of Hamas. Does their political, ideological and military tactics, such as firing rockets in Israel weaken or strengthen the Palestinian struggles. There is a difference between an offensive tactic like firing rockets into Israel and a defensive military strategy such as organizing a new intifada around mass collective workers organizations and from this base defend the Palestinian people with armed struggle.
