Clean Coasts Week is running this week from May 9th - 18th and it is an initiative for people to make a difference by getting out and lending a hand cleaning up all the trash from our beaches. There are over a hundred separate beach cleanups taking place around Ireland this week. See the official list of events at: http://www.cleancoastsweek.ie/events.php Our beaches are a great treasure and place to visit and relax now that the warmer weather is here. At one time our pristine seas and coastlines made these places natural wonders full of birdlife and marine life but with massive overfishing, pollution and huge levels of plastic and general trash entering the seas and dumped on our coastlines, it has caused a lot of harm and destruction to wildlife and to their recreational value. However, we can reverse this process somewhat and the beginning of this long effort to restore our environment starts with events like Clean Coasts Week and with you. read full story / add a comment

The Euro and local council elections take place on Fri May 23rd and nationwide there are 11 MEPs to be elected to represent Ireland Euro elections will also be taking place across Europe for a grand total of 751 seats in the European Parliament. Regrettably the European Commission which is composed of 28 non-elected and appointed commissioners and is besieged by thousands of lobbying firms working for the private sector, is probably reckoned to have more power. Yet despite this Europe matters because at least 70% of our legislation comes from there and practically most of the regulation in a diverse range of areas originates from Europe and some of the more background regulation has its origins with corporate lobbyists with the aim of using heavy regulation to put smaller competitors out of businesses by greatly increasing the relative costs for smaller businesses. The main political parties of Fianna Fail and Fine Gael constantly tell us they are pro business and for jobs and the economy. In fact they are for big business, privatisation, outsourcing of jobs, lower wages, less social safety net and their support of big business and corporations constantly results in the suffocating of small business which are the very areas that lead to most employment. read full story / add a comment

Huge protests are taking place in Spain over bank bailouts of nearly 50 billion and subsequent crippling austerity measures imposed by the Spanish government on the Spanish people and jobless figures of 50% among the under 24 age group. The otherwise peaceful protest was marred at the end when a small group of masked youth engaged with police in violent scuffles. Another leaked phone call. This time between the Estonian FM and Catherine Ashton. It would seem to indicate that the same shooters on the rootops in Ukraine were shooting people on BOTH sides. People have seen this kind of thing before in previous coups by the West such as the attempted coup against Chavez. It was used at the start of the Syria crisis before foreign mercenaries invaded and escalated matters much higher.
