The Luas Cross City is a boon for Dublin city but what does it mean for people who cycle along or across this route? cycling and on-street tram tracks is a safety issue all over the world. In general cyclists learn fast, and realise that they must take greater care around the tracks, and ideally cross them at a large angle, while at the same time be aware of other surrounding traffic. read full story / add a comment

This is a repost of an recent article (Dec 1st) by economic analyst and trade unionist Michael Taft on www.tasc.ie covering the good news trend where there is now a trend in Europe of reversing privatisations. And that is certainly something positive.
There is a spectre haunting Europe – the spectre of de-privatisation, re-municipalisation, and re-nationalisation. Local, regional and national Governments throughout Europe and in other countries - fed up with high costs, low investment, deteriorating quality and poor working conditions – are taking services back into public control and ownership. For many, privatisation has produced poor results; now they are starting to reverse that process. Public ownership is back on the agenda. read full story / add a comment

In the past week two more people have lost their lives while cycling on roads in Ireland, bringing the total number of cyclists killed in 2017 to 14*. That is *four more than were killed in all of 2016, and it makes 2017 the deadliest year for cyclists in more than a decade. Monday the 24th of September at 5pm is the deadline for making submissions to An Bord Pleanála on the South Dublin County Council & Coillte plans for what is known as the Dublin Mountains Project for the Hellfire Club & Masseys Wood nearby. The plan is one dreamed up by the council and will cost € 19 million of taxpayer money i.e. collected property tax etc for what is basically a bit of a white-elephant project that will damage the environment, limit public access and charge a fee for what is now free and is expected to run at a loss for at least first 3 years, but yet the private contractors running it will be "insulated" from losses. In essence the project will put an valuable amenity that is in public hands effectively into private hands and give them a license to milk the public forever on it. If this gets through, it will be replicated all over the country in that arrogant and greed driven way we are all familiar with from the Celtic Tiger days and again today. read full story / add a comment

Anybody who wants to show their support for the proposed segregated Liffey Cycle Route are asked to cycle from the Phoenix Park to the Docklands this Sunday. The cycle is ahead of the Dublin City Council transport committee meeting later this month which is expected to deal with choosing Option 7 which keeps the cycle route on the quays or Option 8 which diverts cycling into a boardwalk and add a number of conflicts with pedestrians. Campaigners are hoping Option 7 is chosen, but it will require diverting motorists off a section of the quays read full story / add a comment

We are delighted to see the Green Party launch their Waste Reduction Bill 2017. The Bill calls for much needed practical steps to combat plastic pollution. A deposit refund scheme is outlined for glass and plastic bottles and a complete ban sought on single use non-recyclable plastics, such as disposable cups. We are aware more than most in Zero Waste Ireland that the issue of plastic pollution is a massive global challenge and a blight on our own country. According to the Green Party, every year, over 110 million tonnes of plastic is produced. Of this, up to 43% ends up in landfill. read full story / add a comment

CAMPAIGN: Urgent action is needed before tomorrow's transport committe meetimg to safe the Liffey Cycle Route: As this site ( http://irishcycle.com/2017/04/29/liffey-cycle-route-sol...path/ ) reported late last week, Dublin City Council officials have maintained that Option 7 of the Liffey Cycle Route is the best route but are opting to recommend the more expensive Option 8 which includes cycling-only boardwalk-like structures and mixes cycling and walking at a number of points. read full story / add a comment

The motion submitted today by AAA-PBP will be debated in the Dail next Tuesday Bin charges are set to rise by between 100 and 200%. It's a good opportunity to meet like-minded people while enjoying a pint and some nice food after work on a Friday. The election cycle has come around yet again it is time to take a look at some of the issues being discussed and more importantly those not discussed and have a quick look at the economy. For this election there are more independents going up than ever before, although people should be warned that a certain fraction of them are closet FFers and FGers so if it is change you are looking for, they may not be the candidates to vote for. Sometimes people seemed to assume Independents tend to be more to the Left. There is no inherent reason this should be the case and statistically one would expect them to evenly spread to the Left and Right. So if voting for an Independent then be sure you have checked what they really stand for and their previous record if any. read full story / add a comment

If there was ever a way to discourage recycling it is to charge for it. But there is more to this story. Way back during the Bin Tax campaign it was said that the original plan was to charge for recycling and all along the plan was to send most of the recycling material like paper, cardboard and plastic to feed the huge incinerator then planned for Dublin. This €600 million incinerator is now being built after it was forced on the people of Dublin by the former chairman of Dublin City Council John Tierney in the most undemocratic and secretive way and completely against all the councillors. This incinerator needs to be fed huge amounts of burnable material to keep it 'profitable'. It was sized for 600,000 tonnes which is more than all waste from Dublin. Tierney of course signed a lucrative deal with the incinerator operators Covanta whereby the council will make up the gap financially if they don't get enough material to feed into the monster. Now the dots have joined up and we can be sure that this announcement to start charging for recycling in July 2016 is very much connected with this since the incinerator will start operating early in 2017. read full story / add a comment

Brid Smith, a People Before Profit councillor, has condemned the role that RPS has been granted in the formulation of the Eastern–Midlands Draft Regional Waste Management Plan 2015-2021. ‘A draft waste plan was presented to Dublin City Councillors this morning which allows for greater centralisation in the management of waste. ‘The plan was based on research drawn up by the company RPS. This company has already had an undue influence in Irish policy making. Two of the directors of Irish Water have already come from this company. read full story / add a comment

Pressure is to be put on politicians - if this incinerator is not stopped they will lose votes (next year or early 2016 is a general election) We need to highlight and get people of Dublin involved - this is a Dublin incinerator that will affect whole of Dublin and Ireland. The Minister for Environment Alan Kelly can stop this incinerator if he gives the power back to Dublin City Councillors to make decisions about waste management. We are asking people to join in our protest on Wednesday 22nd October - meeting at Ringsend church at 5pm and marching to the Dail. Stop the Poolbeg/Dublin Incinerator! In 2012 public opposition forced the ditching of a plan for a "retirement village" on the side of the Dublin mountains, isolated from services and public transport and cut off by the M50, in an area normally zoned for agriculture and public amenity and widely used by the public. A previous plan for a private school on the site had been rejected for similar reasons in 2005. After the local elections the plan is back in a lightly tweaked form, with the developer's sister among a number of newly elected councillors supporting the project. read full story / add a comment

The Local Council Elections are taking place this week and it is worth taking a look at what they are about and what main groups other than FF and FG are running whilst relecting on recent history aka the Mahon Planning Tribunal to remind ourselves of how bad things were. Also an attempt is made to devise a list of questions for the candidates when they come canvassing to your door and to get people thinking about what councils do and why you should spend even a few minutes a year to find out more and get them to work for you instead of vested interests. read full story / add a comment |
