Andrew Johnson Prior to the recent Dail election, the one constant prediction had been of very large gains for Sinn Fein. In the event, the party made a modest gain in its vote share, from 6.5% to 6.9%, a credible gain in absolute votes from 120,000 to 140,000, but failed to win any new seats and suffered the high-profile loss of Sean Crowe in Dublin South-West. read full story / add a comment

national / animal rights / event notice Wednesday July 11, 2007 21:18 by John Carmody
October 4th – 10th 2007 is world animal week. Here in Ireland, Animal Rights Action Network (ARAN) will organize a nationwide week of action to support our joint ‘Stop Circus Suffering in Ireland’ campaign with our colleagues at Animal Defenders International (www.ad-international.org). Across the country there will be local campaigners gathering petitions, writing letters, contacting the media and staging peaceful protests outside of circuses that use animals. Never before has our campaign being so successful at highlighting the terrible conditions and the suffering animals endure in traveling circuses, people are refusing to support this cruelty, they are choosing different forms of ‘entertainment’, our message is simple – Ban Animal Act Circuses in Ireland. read full story / add a comment

In the last while attention on this site has been brought yet again to the suicide crises & adjacent mental health issues amongst our young. We've read much & been directed to yet other sites and resources who like most of us want to do our bit to tackle the problem. There seems to be growing concensus that the nasty hard approach just isn't working. Yet we've still got some work to do in appraising what that means & how it ought influence contemporary anarchist & friends activism, conversation, chit-chat & attitude. It goes without saying the judicial, penal & educational policies and frameworks of both the Irish state & Irish society have a role to play. But lest we get diverted into learning a list of "warning signs" & "indicators" of those dealing with the various psychological or emotional challenges which may lead to suicide I thought to bring it back to primary school. We don't know at what stage the branch davidian group of fundamentalist christians of mount Carmel in Waco, Texas crossed the line of extremism. Most people don't remember what the suspected crime was which brought the US federal agencies complete with tanks and psychological weaponry to lay seige to the compound & demand its leader David Koresh to surrender. Was the illegal fully automatic weapons which neighbours professed to hear or the rumours that Koresh had taken unto him as wives all the females (some barely adolescent) in the compound to mother his children? Few will tell you that the Oklahoma bombing of a Federal social security office by Timothy Veigh & others as revenge for the Waco massacre was first atttributed to Islamic fundamentalists. We now know the FBI regretted the crises as soon as the charred remains of the children were brought out of the rubble. Musharraf's attack on the Lal Masjid or Red Mosque of Islamabad is comparable. read full story / add a comment

A recent independent report oby a delegation of international human rights and environmental activists has slammed the actions of the Gardai in Mayo for suppressing peaceful protest and creating civil unrest. The report, issued by the Global Community Monitor (GCM), was compiled from evidence gathered at a public hearing as well as through interviews, emails and video footage. It does not, however, take a position in relation to the construction of Shell’s pipeline. read full story / add a comment |
