Climate Change will flood Limerick

category limerick | environment | other press author Wednesday July 11, 2007 18:38author by Limerick Socialist Youth - Socialist Youthauthor email socialistyouth at hotmail dot comauthor address Limerickauthor phone 086-8064801 Report this post to the editors

Come to RESISTANCE!

According to a recent report by the Environmental Protection Agency Limerick will be flooded within 50 years (if not sooner) due to rising sea levels resulting from climate change.

In response to this Socialist Youth have been out on the streets of Limerick recently, demanding immediate action to stop climate change.

The 80% increase in CO2 in the atmosphere since the industrial revolution means that more and more sun rays are being ‘trapped’ and so temperatures are rising. This is the so-called ‘green house effect’ and it is resulting in more and more extreme weather e.g. hurricanes and floods. It is also melting the polar ice caps, causing sea levels to rise.

The vast majority of scientists (and scientific evidence) now agree that in order to stop climate change and the humanitarian disasters that go with it we must drastically reduce CO2 emissions. The question, however, is how?

Cian Prendiville, a member of Socialist Youth said: “The biggest problem is big business. They have held back any steps towards dealing with climate change. Big oil and car companies pull the politicians strings and they are making billions from the pollution causing climate change”.

Cian went on to say: “On Saturday the 21st of July we are hosting RESISTANCE – a forum for young people and at this we will be discussing and debating how climate change can be stopped. We have a debate with the Young PDs over whether it is big business and the capitalist market that are to blame. We also have a brilliant documentary called ‘Who killed the electric car?’ which shows how the big car companies are holding back eco-friendly technology to protect their profits.”

The Forum on Saturday July 21st starts at 1pm upstairs in Riddlers Bar on Sarsfield Street and is followed by a youth gig from 6.

Other similar forums in Dublin & Belfast on the 21st and Cork & Galway on the 28th - See website for details
