We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

It's bad enough that all UK TV users are forced to fund the BBC via a TV licence. But it's worse than that, says Charlotte Gill: millions of pounds of taxpayers' money are handed to the corporation via backdoor channels.

This article illustrates how the US invasion and occuption of Iraq has destroyed what was previously a secular society. Power has been put into the hands of reactionary clerics. Full article at the link.

Religious clerics are beginning to play an increasingly powerful role in Iraq. Many Iraqis now fear that they are endangering human rights and religious freedom in the once largely secular country. Clerics began to play a major role since the U.S.-led occupation began in April 2003. Despite the promises of U.S. President George W. Bush to turn Iraq into a secular and free country, clerics have become the real leaders, and are beginning to control most political matters.

Michael Mc Dowell, being back in the High Court defending the Rights of the Father
is awaiting judgement of the Mr 'G' case, in which a father has applied for return of his kids
from another jurisdiction (UK) and the right to be a father and to educate his children.
Another recent High Court case is being prepared to go to the Supreme Court regarding
the rights of a woman to use the eggs she is storing and to have the dad pay for the
future life and education of any child conceived as result of the process- the father
won citing the end of the marriage and irreconcilable difference. She is appealing.
Both cases involve:- Father's Rights to family and both are read for and judged
within the confines of the Catholic Constitution drafted by De Valera and of
course substanially amended by Archbishop Mc Quaid. The 'G' case should get loads of coverage. read full story / add a comment

Cork S2S activists and supporters will be travelling to Mayo this Friday to take part in the National Day of Protest called by the community campaign in Erris. Once again, Shell to Sea campaigners and supporters will be showing solidarity with and lending their numbers to the ongoing protest by the local community. For seven years now concerned local citizens have opposed the unsafe and unprecedented Corrib Gas project, and they have had the broad support of the community for most of this time. Excepting those few individuals whose business interests have been co-opted by Shell et al, the community’s support for the Shell to Sea campaign endures, and has even deepened. read full story / add a comment

From June to mid-August, postal workers in the North and in Britain were taking industrial action. Management are on the offensive, and the action was to protect existing conditions.

In a display of cross-border common purpose An Post bosses are also having a go, with conditions under attack as a prelude to selling off parts of the service to private companies. So, An Post workers have a special interest in how the Communications Workers Union dispute progresses

N. Chomsky on the likelihood of a USA attack on Iran: "They're desperate. Everything they touch is in ruins. They're even in danger of losing control over Middle Eastern oil. As if proof were needed of how the idyllic peaceful ways of Ireland are different from Ilford London along comes this next story in foreign silliness - One small town entrepeneur & champion of street crime victims in Rumford, North East England is making consumer news at the moment. The "Bladerunner" company has been making kevlar gloves for some years now, but this year began production of stylish stab proof hooded jackets which are now proving a street cred must amongst the ever more paranoid & cautious parent of i-pod back to schoolers.
Testimonial writers & satisfied customers even tell tales of their foiled stabbing at bank machines - "your hoody saved my life". read full story / add a comment

The following is not intended to be an attempt at a comprehensive analysis of the current situation in the Occupied Territories of Palestine. Instead, it is a reflection on the past few weeks I have spent with the International Solidarity Movement in the city of Hebron and its environs and what brought me here in the first place. It is completely subjective and deliberately intended to be so. It is merely a personal reflection, and therefore should not be taken as representative of the views of the ISM. read full story / add a comment
