To commemorate the Night of the Dead,
when the windows between this world and the next are torn off their hinges
and all kinds of malicious spirits wander the earth in search of mortal prey,
and the victims they seek awaken in the chilly sweat of fear
and cling desperately to their Rosary beads, their Korans, their stethoscopes
or whatever other talismans they can lay their trembling hands on,
and feverishly mutter whatever prayers and incantations to protect them ... read full story / add a comment

Ireland granted residency to about 17,000 parents of Irish born Children mostly women and then decided that these category of Irish Citizen Children do not have any entitlement to family unification and so we have a situation where the fathers of these children are being turned away. What we risk creating for our future generation is what I dread because this policy if not reversed will only polarise the community and we will have the "us" and "them" divide. read full story / add a comment

Award winning journalist and documentary maker, John Pilger marks the European release of Michael Moore's latest film, Sicko, with an examination of why the documentary film-maker exerts such influence, with fans and enemies alike. "In societies ruled by an invisible government of media," he writes, "no one has broken through like Moore, who breaks every rule by reporting from the ground up, instead of from the top down."

Here is a report of yet another murderous attack on a worker activist by the Iranian State forces. Trade Unionists in Iran deserve our support in their struggle for the right to form unions.

On Thursday, October 18, at 9:00 AM in Sanandaj in Iran, 3 plain clothes agents who had covered their faces attempted to assassinate Majid Hamidi a labour activists in Sanandaj. Mr. Hamidi is a member of the Coordinating Committee to Form Workers’ Organization as well as a member of the Committee in Defence of Mahmoud Salehi. Reports by the two above organizations, indicate that Mr. Hamidi was shot 7 times in the arm, shoulder and neck. Friends and neighbors immediately took Mr. Hamidi to the Sanandaj’s hospital and he was transferred to Tehran for surgery.

According to the Committee in Defence of Mahmoud Salehi, Mr. Hamidi himself has said that this is the least price workers and labour activists have to pay in Iran to achieve their demands and rights. read full story / add a comment

Yesterday, Galway Food Not Bombs were at it again in Shop Street, this time beneath the shelter of green canvas, sporting a freshly painted flourescent banner and augmented with three new activists.

From our tentative start some months back, we are now riding the crest of a wave of goodwill; from the city's Community Wardens who no longer harrass us, to the plethora of shops who, in empathy, donate not unsubstantial amounts of food to us every Saturday evening. read full story / add a comment
