The Israeli Amry Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi called for international pressure on Iran. Kazem Darabi who was sentenced to life imprisonment by a German court was released on Monday 10 December after serving 15 years in jail. He had been convicted of involvement in the murder of three leaders of Iranian Kurdish Democratic Party (KDP), Sadegh Sharafkandi, Fattah Abdoli, Homayoun Ardalan and their translator Nouri Dehkord in Berlin. They were dining in the Mykonos restaurant and were in Berlin for a convention of the Socialist International. read full story / add a comment

The Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign will be holding a lunchtime protest on Thursday 13th December at the EU Headquarters in Dublin. What: Protest rally When: 1pm, Thursday 13th December Where: EU Offices Building, 43 Molesworth St, Dublin (near the Dail building). Why: In a nutshell, the 13th is the day the EU are signing into effect the 'Lisbon Reform Treaty'. The IPSC is using this opportunity to highlight the EU's role (via the International Quartet) in imposing an aid embargo on Gaza, as well as the general eclipsing of the Gazan crisis by the frenzy surrounding the Annapolis conference. If Katy French had grown up in Finglas or Ballyfermot or Clondakin or Lucan or someother place that the politicians in the Dail and establishment who live in leafy afluent parts of South Dublin do not know exist and was working in a supermarket when she died from using cocaine her death would have been mentioned in a tiny paragraph in the newspapers and would not resurface until months later the coroner would rule the fatalily was the result of death through misadventure. If Katy French had not died this past week the deaths and hospitalisation of a number of young men in Waterford and in the Midlands from drug use would hardly have earned a mention in the mainstream broadsheets. read full story / add a comment

Irish, Basque and Catalan protesters picketed outside the GPO on 8th December to protest repression by Spanish authorities of Basque left-separatists. On the 7th, three traditional Basque musicians performing at the Long Note debut in Dublin were applauded when they stated that theirs was the oldest living language in Europe and their culture one of the oldest and that their people would continue to fight for their political and civil rights. read full story / add a comment

Ógra Shinn Féin recently launched a film at a Basque/Irish Night in Conway Mill Belfast. The film explores the cultural, social and political realities in the Basque country and looks at the current struggle for independence. This issue contains a special report from the International Labour Organisation on Iranian violations of workers rights. ILO ANNUAL SURVEY OF VIOLATIONS OF TRADE UNION RIGHTS: IRAN. Protest activity: Despite the ban on strikes, workers protests and other work stoppages are a daily occurrence throughout Iranian enterprises. They are often repressed. Most of these protests concern either low wages, the non-payment of wages, lay-offs or factory closures. The minimum wage set by the government is $US 140 per month, while the official poverty line stands at $US 300.
