Shell recently announced the names of local groups in Erris who they are going to fund, as part of the deal they arrived with government appointed mediator Peter Cassels in 2006.
Cassells, who admitted that there was no basis for mediation while Shell insisted on an onshore production pipeline and refinery, recommended that the company should pay money into the local community in an effort to turn public opinion in favour of the scheme. Of the groups favoured with grants, only a handful were from the local parish of Kilcommon, which would bear the brunt of the environmental disaster that Shell's scheme would entail. Of these, local people laughed at some of the more obviously silly and fictional "groups", but people were genuinely puzzled by the inclusion of the Dooncarton Landslide Committee. This group, which is widely respected in the local area, has been working to rebuild the local cemetery which was badly damaged in 2003, when heavy rains swept part of the hillside down into the bay. read full story / add a comment ![]()

The March/April issue of the magazine History Ireland contains a major article on Irish anarchists in the late nineteenth-century that should be of interest to today's anarchist activists. The title is '"Practical anarchists, we": social revolutionaries in Dublin, 1885-7' In Ireland and Britain in the 1880s, the Fenians occupied the demonic role of 'terrorists' in the recesses of the bourgeois mind, and less attention was paid to terrorists of the radical left. Historian Fintan Lane relates how anarchists, though scarcely noticed, were nevertheless active in Ireland and argued openly for social revolution, though not for 'individual terror'. History Ireland is on sale in Eason's across the country. read full story / add a comment

A 68 year old pensioner from Cabra is been brought to court by Dublin City Council for putting rubbish into the back of a bin truck. DCC are seeking substantial legal costs off this pensioner if he loses his case. The local anti-bin tax campaign, comprising Cabra/Dunard/Navan Rd. and the Dublin anti-bin tax campaign are fully supporting this pensioner. We have organised a fundraising pub-quiz on the 11th April in Eamonn McGraths pub, Fassaugh Avenue, Cabra. Any support will be appreciated. read full story / add a comment

In this article, Peter Tatchell deals with the latest lies and homophobic outbursts from George Galloway. In this case Galloway is supporting the Iranian Regiome even when it comes to the execution of gays using any lies to cover for them. George Galloway, the Respect MP, has made allegations that border on paedophile smears and play to homophobic prejudice. He claims the boyfriend of gay Iranian asylum seeker Mehdi Kazemi was executed (1) for "committing sex crimes against young men". The insinuation of such a claim is that Mehdi's boyfriend was a rapist or a child sex abuser and also stigmatises Mehdi as he was his partner. He will suffer this stigma when he is returned to the UK and could face personal hostility from people who believe these allegations . Galloway made his astonishing allegation on Channel Five's The Wright Stuff. He has been asked to explain the source of his claim, but has so far failed to do so. read full story / add a comment

The German magazine "Stern" published a report on the supermarket LIDL in the last week which alledged the corporation had been spying on its employees. The story is now being taken up across Europe, where indeed workers shop in & work for the LIDL chain. The allegations are being supported daily by more and more evidence as can be seen by perusing the original articles at "Stern" complete with photos, a vid, extracts from internal memos, et cetera, so long & so forth. Included in the internal memos were suggestions that menstruating women employees wear a coloured headband so managers could allow them extra "toilet time", time which would be denied male or non-menstruating employees. It gets worse.., "tattoos"........."wants higher wages"........"junkie friends"......... read full story / add a comment
