In the summer of 1936, an army-led coup against the democratically elected Spanish republic ignited a three-year conflict which can today be seen as the first round of the Second World War. The Nationalist forces were backed by Hitler, Mussolini and international capital, a combination which resulted in the defeat of the republic and 40 years’ of repression and terror, with which the Spanish people are only now coming to terms. read full story / add a comment

On March 27, the U.S. appeals court in Philadelphia reaffirmed the frame-up conviction of Mumia Abu-Jamal, the former Black Panther Party spokesman and world-renowned radical journalist who has been locked up on Pennsylvania’s death row for more than a quarter century. Mumia is innocent. He was declared guilty and sentenced to die because of his revolutionary politics and because for years he had been a thorn in the side of the racist rulers of the misnamed “city of brotherly love.” Around the world, millions have come out in defense of Jamal. This latest ruling, like all those that preceded it, shows that the exploited and oppressed must have no faith in the racist injustice system. We call on the workers movement to mobilize its power to free Mumia now! read full story / add a comment

Dutch socialist MP Harry Van Bommel led the successful No vote campaign in Holland in 2005. His argument was primarily on the undemocratic nature of the EU. Of his own country he said he found it “remarkable that 62 per cent of voters reject something that is supported by 85 per cent of parliament.”. That was then. Now, Harry’s back. He wants to continue the “debate on what Europe should be and should do”. Mr Van Bommel is taking part in a speaking tour of Ireland, and will be speaking in Tralee on Sunday April 6th at 8PM at the Grand Hotel. read full story / add a comment

Below is a letter that I recently sent to about 120 newspapers. A small number have got back to me to say they are featurising the story. Others are publishing it as a letter. The Sunday Business Post got in contact to see if it was sent to anyone else (I haven't heard from them since I said it was; my personal thought it that if it's not their scoop, they're not interested). It has also been sent to Tesco (without a reply, yet!). Feel free to copy/distribute/send to Tesco. read full story / add a comment

This morning's London Independent headlines with the news that a Christian Evangelical Group had paid interns working in the offices of Ministers in the run-up to the Human Fertilisation and Embrology Bill*. This contentious Bill had sought to lump together the issues of Chimeric (human-animal) creation together with a new amendment to reduce the 24 week abortion limit . The Group: C.A.R.E. Christian Action, Research and Education had access all areas in the Commons and of course into research materials pertinent to the legislation. This prompts one question- Tony Blair had brought some of the biggest US Companies to the UK to work in the areas of genetic research (despite his personal Evangelicalism and recent conversion). So what are the Evangelicals so pissed off about? (Abortion rights)/HFE. read full story / add a comment
