Amnesty has once more taken up the cases of women activists who have been persecuted in Iran., some of them were beaten whilst in custody. Others have now been sentenced to flogging. Their only crime is to campaign for womens rights. Full text at link. Amnesty International has written to the Head of the Judiciary in Iran, urging him to ensure that appeals hearings against the convictions and sentences of six women’s rights defenders (WRDs) passed in recent weeks in connection with their peaceful exercise of their rights to freedom of expression and association are heard promptly and impartially. If the sentences are confirmed at appeal, the organization is calling on the Head of the Judiciary, Ayatollah Hashemi Shahroudi, to review the cases and to overturn the convictions of the women, all of whom will become prisoners of conscience if imprisoned. read full story / add a comment

While the rest of us are slaving away to make end’s meat and facing the brunt of the ‘credit crunch’ We are continually told by our political rulers to be ‘competitive’ for the bosses waiting for the promised ‘trickle-down effect’ that never arrives. Staggering rises in energy prices above the rate of inflation, imposition of un-wanted water charges while hundreds of people die every year due to ‘fuel poverty’ it seems the North elite rich club have never had it so good according to the latest Sunday Times rich list. There is now a record of 61 people from the north among Ireland’s richest 250 and they are getting richer! Last year their wealth increased to a combined £10.7 billion! On top of the list like every year is Fermanagh’s Sean Quinn worth about £3.7 billion, who does allot of dealing in insurance and property market. Alright for some eh? read full story / add a comment

This morning in Castlebar, the judge in the case involving three local fishermen who were appealing against prison sentences imposed on them, suddenly announced that he was excusing himself from making a judgment. Judge Rory McCabe told the court that he has a personal conflict in dealing with the case and would not be able to hear it. He declined to say what the nature of this conflict is. He said he would try to make alternative arrangements for another judge to hear the case later this week. The judge in the original case, Mary Devins has been criticised because she insists she has no conflict in hearing case relating to the government backed-Shell scheme even though she is married to a Fianna Fail minister, Jimmy Devins. read full story / add a comment
