Full on trucker revolt going on in Spain is leading to mini-riots, looting, chaos. There are plenty of other revolts of a similar kind going on around the world right now and I suppose you could easily add in the Irish Fishermen. Forced cuts in Fuel use / fuel price hikes are the equivalent of steep wage cuts. But not much sympathy. PPL think. oh those nasty truckers and fishermen - they're causing global warming. Between a rock and a hard place. Anyone got on the ground reports from Spain? This stuff exaggerated? read full story / add a comment

The National Concert Hall was a hive of activity yesterday evening long before the symphony concert began at 8.00 p.m. Lyric FM were ensconced in the foyer with some kind of panel connected with a composers' congress which had been taking place in Dublin. I did not get involved in listening because I was in an upstairs room with a few dozen other punters listening to the pre-concert talk. Composer Gerald Barry created a great centre of attention at the talk and around the foyer afterwards and later he took a bow on stage at the end of the Irish premiére concert performance of his opera, La Plus Forte, 2006. A very interesting and talented man who has already achieved a lot he may go on to produce even greater work. He was born, according to the program, in 1952. read full story / add a comment ![]()

The Irish Socialist Network welcomes the decision of the Irish people to reject the Lisbon Treaty – a document that would have promoted the militarisation of the EU, entrenched Thatcherite principles in European law, and further undermined democracy. After this result, the Lisbon Treaty should be dead and buried. No re-hashed, re-packaged version of the same document should be foisted on the people of Europe. No means no. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Shannon was very quiet this morning with very few "civilian" passengers. Just a few Ryanair jets and even less Aer Lingus, now that they decamped to Belfast. Much of the business at Shannon was breaching Irish neutrality. More importantly, the CIA and military use of Shannon this morning was directly complicit in breaches of the UN Convention against Torture and international laws including the Geneva Conventions on War. read full story / add a comment

It has indeed been a Friday the 13th the yes campaigners would rather forget. A resounding No! 2 Lisbon was the result, with a comfortable 110,000 votes ahead and a margin of 53.4% to 46.6%. A considerable achievement considering the profile of those calling on support for the Lisbon Treaty. Sinn Féin was the only major party to call for a No! vote. Sinn Féin and their youth wing Ógra Shinn Féin have continuously said that a better deal could be negotiated for Ireland in Europe, and as a result have campaigned and canvassed for a no vote. read full story / add a comment ![]()

One of the arguments for the way Shell want to operate the Corrib gas field has always been that using a production pipeline/ onshore refinery would limit the need for helicopter flights for workers. Flights to and from offshore rigs are said to be dangerous. Local people have always countered that there was an element of choice in working for Shell, while they had no choice about living next to a high pressure production pipeline. Now however, the director of air safety for Shell has said that helicopter flights are not actually that dangerous at all. An examination of 2,000 helicopter accidents has shown that it was poor air safety systems that were the problem, and the majority of accidents could have been prevented by following more stringent procedures. read full story / add a comment

Foreign Minister Michael Martin and other Irish Euro-federalists are already planning to subvert the Lisbon Treaty referendum result by urging the other EU States to continue with their ratification process instead of telling them that Ireland cannot ratify the Lisbon Treaty as it stands, and that further ratifications elsewhere are therefore pointless, and the Treaty must be reopened. read full story / add a comment
