A school of curious dolphins were attacked yesterday lunchtime by a vessel supporting Shell's offshore pipeline works in Broadhaven Bay at Glengad. The Niamh Aine - a pleasure boat hired to escort various work vessels around the area - drove across the path of two of the dolphins who were inspecting the Vlaanderen VII barge. read full story / add a comment

August 9 1971 was a pivotal date in Irish history. The introduction of internment exposed, yet again, the ugly face of British imperialism in Ireland and acted as a catalyst for increased resistance to the occupation.

The introduction of 42-day detention is a similar travesty of justice, foisted upon an unwilling population by a British government that is determined to repress dissent.

A group of Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW) are planning to start
up a GI coffeehouse near the entrance of the Fort Lewis military base
in Washington State. Though the project is still in its planning
stages, the idea is that it will be a center for supporting GI rights
and war resistance in the region, as well as a place for GIs to get
coffee right off the base.

Ben Lewis argues that the threat to Iran from Imperialism is still very real. He also analyses developments within various anti-war groups. Full story at link.

Within the context of Barack Obama attempting to prove himself a reliable statesman by dropping in on occupying forces in Iraq, and with Gordon Brown’s speech to the knesset underlining his readiness to “stand firmly by Israel’s side” and call for “further sanctions and isolation” if Iran does not halt its alleged nuclear weapons programme, it is quite clear that the Geneva talks have not reduced the threat of a military strike. Things are precariously balanced and even the slightest incident, accident or diplomatic faux pas could trigger another bout of destruction and slaughter.

Surely no right-minded individual could admit to being against 'sustainability'. Or in favour of 'unsustainable' development. End of argument? Not according to Austin Williams, author of a new book, The Enemies of Progress, who argues that the drive for sustainability is killing creativity and holding back development.

But with the days of plentiful, cheap oil gone and with international terrorism and food security back on the agenda, has necessity truly
become the mother of invention? And, anyway, isn't creativity about finding solutions which overcome
restraints?

Come along on Tuesday 29 July at 7p m, meet the author and join the debate read full story / add a comment

ARAN activists recently staged a protest on the steps of the Australian embassy in Dublin to call for an end to live cruel sheep exports from Australia. Our activists cordoned off the area as a crime scene with barrier tape reading 'crime scene do not enter' whilst the 'sheep' played dead and covered in fake 'blood' layed on the steps, whilst other members held placards calling for an end to the cruel live export of sheep. Press coverage was fantastic helping to direct the public's attention to cruelty to animals - all in all a very positive, upbeat event to draw attention to a very serious issue.
