In the last hour Shell has announced that the Solitaire pipe laying ship is to depart from Irish territorial waters and go to a British port for repair and assessment. The company has always claimed that it was not responding to pressure from protests against its plan to install an offshore section of production pipeline without any planning permission for the onshore section. Maura Harrington, who is on hunger strike at the Shell compund at Glengad beach, has yet to make a statement, but it is hoped that if the company claim is true, and the ship leaves, then she may end or suspend her protest. read full story / add a comment

Now that today's expressions of solidarity for Maura in Galway have been serendiptously overtaken by Shell's announcement that "the Solitaire will leave Killybegs today for a UK Port where deep water berthing facilities are available," at the risk of wrongly second guessing her, a sweet and honourable ending to her hunger strike is, surely, in the offing.? read full story / add a comment

Today a group of climate activists disrupted the AGM of Ryanair at the Radisson Hotel, Dublin Airport. Campaigners dropped a banner from the hotel with a subvertised Ryanair logo reading ' LYINAIR.CON'. One campaigner confronted a dumb-struck Michael O'Leary at the podium, while other eco-clowns juggled outside. The PLANE MAD campaigners are campaigning for responsible aviation. By pioneering the cheap flights model Ryanair have been responsible for a significant proportion of the massive growth in the aviation industry. Aviation is currently the fastest growing source of greenhouse gases. While governments and individuals are gearing up to tackle their carbon emissions it is necessary to accept the reality that flying is the most polluting form of transport. Plane Mad is an Irish campaigning group taking action against the unsustainable nature of aviation in Ireland. To find out more visit www.planemad.org read full story / add a comment

In his latest column for the New Statesman, John Pilger examines news as parody as those prominent in the British media seek to justify the official versions of the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan: Here comes the new Cold War, with promises of more bombs, more of the militarised society with its 730 bases worldwide, on which Americans spend 42 cents of every tax dollar... the devastation of Iraq’s health, once the best in the Middle East, by the ubiquitous dust from British and US depleted uranium weapons. A World Health Organisation study reporting a cancer epidemic has been suppressed ... read full story / add a comment
