The media are wrong to pin the blame for the Canadian Conservatives' loss on Trump, says Prof James Allan. In truth, the Tories' vote was sky high ? but the Left-wing vote coalesced around Carney.

Over 500 people turned out today for a great march against the US/UK war on Iraq and Afghanistan. Starting in Parnell Square it made its way down O'Connell where the suppport of passers by was occasionally made clear by cheers of support, up Dame Street and back down to the island on O'Connell St where we were all corralled during the speeches. It isn't clear why the organisers agreed to this corralling because it meant that almost no-one could see the speakers. Speakers were generally interesting - great to hear the raytheon 9 spokesperson - but mostly were the same people who speak at every IAWM march or variations of same. Overall a good demo and fair play to the organisers.

Shannon next on October 28th for the demo called by Antiwar Ireland! read full story / add a comment

Rice’s new’ Middle East is depressingly and wearyingly familiar to anyone with even a cursory knowledge of the history of imperialist interventions in the region. Just like those British and French colonialists who sat over maps a century ago redrawing boundaries across the Middle East, the US, the UK and the Israelis imagine they can shape a subcontinent regardless of the needs or desires of the majority of the people who live there. read full story / add a comment

The raytheon 9, arrested on August 9 for disarming raytheon, had a preliminary remand hearing today. They were escorted to the Court House in Derry by a large, noisy & colourful demonstration of support. Before going in Eamonn McCann, speaking on behalf of the 9, read out a statement (below). After they went in, representatives of the demonstration handed in the letter from the 99 signatories (also below). The case was adjourned to a hearing on Octobver 12. read full story / add a comment

Direct Action Against Drax
international / environment / opinion/analysis Friday September 01, 2006 18:24 by watchman   text 6 comments (last - saturday september 02, 2006 21:06)   image 1 image
Members of the British SWP have surprisingly come out in support of yesterdays direct action to shut down the "Drax" coal power station in England. The action was the culmination of a week of environmental workshops held on a squatted common under heavy police surveillance with around 600 people attending. The SWP of course had nothing to do with the camp or the action but it seems they may be looking to hijack the growing libertarian-environmental movement in the UK. The support for this action and the raytheon action show how the SWP, who are currently desperate for membership after seriously discrediting themselves several times over the past few years with GR, IAWM and Mayday04, are contradicting their long running opposition to direct action. read full story / add a comment

The Belfast High court today lifted most of the restrictions on the raytheon 9. Veteran Civil Rights activist and revolutionary socialist Eamonn McCann told Blackshamrock.org today that he and the other 8 men facing charges relating to the decommissioning of raytheon's computers are as of today no longer prevented from meeting up with each other, holding meetings in groups of more than 3, or from attending anti-war functions. Normal bail signing restrictions and the restriction of the nine from the Branch Road, where raytheon has its premises in the Ulster Science and Technology park, are to remain in place. At the initial bail hearing, the judge had hinted that human rights legislation might prevent the High Court from preventing the Nine from exercising their right to freedom of assembly. The main effect of the lifting of these restrictions, said McCann, is that they are now no longer prevented from taking part in the campaign. read full story / add a comment
