The Socialist Party has been in discussion with others on the left with a view to forming an Electoral Alliance for the Local Elections which will take place in June 2009. These discussions have been publicly carried in the pages of our paper "the Socialist" and on sites such as this. The Socialist Party has put forward a very positive proposal for a local election slate of candidates. It is important the slate would field credible candiates with a record in the their area that there is political agreement with the programme of the slate which will flow from discussions. We feel these issues among others mentioned in the material below are extremley important if we are to get aggreement. This is why in these proposals we have provided fuller elaboration of our position in an open, honest and constructive manner we hope that other groups will respond in kind. read full story / add a comment ![]()

The official story is that the origins of the current crisis lie in the collapse of the US subprime mortgage market - i.e. poor people not paying their mortgages. Although this may have been the trigger event, it is not the real cause. The real cause lies in pyramids not houses. Specifically the enormous debt pyramid built up by the Western countries, particularly those following the Anglo-saxon economic model - which, unfortunately for us, includes Ireland. read full story / add a comment

Big Business doesn’t like what’s happening in South America. The election of reforming governments in Peru and Ecuador might have been a bearable irritant but that Chavez guy in Venezuela has really got up their noses. In Bolivia sections of the local ruling class got so riled up that they tried to overthrow President Morales in September. The US ruling class, in collusion with local bosses, is trying to destabilise political and economic reforms. As they see it, too much is going to workers and peasants, and not enough into their own coffers. read full story / add a comment

Pat Breen, Fine Gael TD from Bunratty, showed that he's been listening to the lies about natural resources, and he believes them, when he spoke about Corrib in the Dáil. The sad thing is that his acceptance of the nonsense peddled by Shell and the Green Party means that instead of an opposition testing and challenging the government we have a docile and pointless group of placemen waiting for a chance to get into government simply to get a few things for their constituents and jobs for their friends. read full story / add a comment

The AOHS have contacted (Laura Keys) at the Kilkenny People newspaper who have confirmed that online opinion polls are open to mass voting by lobby groups. We alerted our supporters to the vote online but realise that as this poll is running for a week till Tuesday it means nothing in terms of real analysis. The votes in favour of ‘foxhunting being discontinued’ have fluctuated from over 80% in favour to just below 50% at other times. Its like a game show, excuse the pun, and the site itself easily allows repeat voting, it is readily open to abuse which makes it all irrelevant. The newspaper have now confirmed they are well aware of the mass-voting aspect. “For this reason I think it's pointless to participate in these "polls". They are totally unscientific, are easily rigged, and only really exist to drive traffic to the sites to boost their advertising revenue. read full story / add a comment
