Lindsey German and John Rees have declared all out war on the SWP central committee majority. There can be only one winner in this fight. If Lindsey and John lose the battle then a split is likely. Peter Manson reports on this fight to the finish. Full story at link. The SWP leadership has continued the process of disempowering its former number one, John Rees, by recommending that he be removed from the central committee at the SWP annual conference, due to take place in London over the weekend of January 9-11 2009. Meeting on Wednesday November 26, the CC decided to exclude Rees from its take-it-or-leave-it slate, with only his long-time allies, Chris Bambery and Chris Nineham, voting against ditching him. read full story / add a comment

The Communist Organization of Greece (KOE) salutes the dozens of thousands of youth and people who continue, for the third consecutive day, the resolute and combative demonstrations against the government and the police murder. At this moment (morning of Monday 8 December) thousands of school pupils are demonstrating in front of the Athens Police General Headquarters, as well as in many neighborhoods of Athens and all over Greece. This afternoon the Coalition of Radical Left (SYRIZA) and other left organizations call for big popular demonstrations in the centre of Athens and in many other cities. Even the Communist Party of Greece (KKE), which until now made nothing and did not participate in any protest, now feels the pressure and the anger of the youth and of the popular masses and calls for a (separate, as always…) meeting in Athens. read full story / add a comment

Rallies and protests against the education cuts have taken place in Cork, Donegal, Galway and now Dublin. The same unions which have accepted the National Pay Deal are not accepting the cuts, the same people who voted to accepted the pay deal are not accepting the education cuts. This unresolved contradiction is at the heart of this new protest movement. The ideology of the market which became entrenched under Partnership and the Celtic Tiger is unravelling. These images reflect the search for a new language of resistance and a confusion on taking it forward. Who can do it? Who will do it? What will it take? read full story / add a comment ![]()

Lawyers acting on behalf of Michael McKevitt have submitted a fresh application to the Supreme Court in Dublin seeking to have a previous Supreme Court judgement overturned and a new appeal initiated. This unprecedented action by McKevitt’s legal team is prompted by the fact that the previous Supreme Court judgement (July 2008) relied greatly on ‘facts’ provided by the prosecution. Subsequently, the Director of Public Prosecutions has acknowledged these to be inaccurate. read full story / add a comment ![]()

This is an extract from an interview with Ali Pichgah, one of the founding members of the oil workers’ shora (council) who later played an important role in the first major oil strike against the Theocracy. Ali details the oil workers actions which helped to bring down the Shah and the later struggles against the Theocracy. Comrade Pichgah is a supporter of Hands Off the People of Iran. Full text at link. How do you assess current workers’ struggles in Iran? First of all, I must say that as long as capitalism rules class struggle exists. The capitalist order in Iran has managed to survive through repression and force, and the spreading of religious superstition and falsehoods. However, as far as the workers’ struggle is concerned, our ranks are divided; and as long as we can’t unite on a large scale, this repression will continue. Unity requires the building of strong, mass workers’ organisations. read full story / add a comment
