The man the Newsletter calls “the respected journalist Henry McDonald,” the Newsletter's Ireland correspondent - sorry, mistake, the Guardian's Ireland correspondent - calls students who drank a lot on St Patrick's Day 'Catholic/nationalist'. What's more, they are 'rural', shock horror. Ticks all the prejudicial boxes - cannot be allowed.

But how does Henry know?

It's easy: 'judging from the Gaelic football and Glasgow Celtic shirts, as well as the names of those the PSNI decided to arrest'.

Would the Guardian publish this type of drivel about the Notting Hill carnival? No because in that case it would be racist. In this case it is merely sectarian, while claiming not to be. read full story / add a comment

“There was absolutely no change in the government’s position.”

An unpublished interview with Sir John Blelloch, a member of MI5 who had been seconded to the NIO as a Deputy Secretary at the time of the 1980 and 1981 hunger strikes, has come into the possession of the Bobby Sands Trust. The interview was conducted at the British Ministry of Defence in late September 1986 [where Blelloch was Permanent Under Secretary] by the author of ‘Biting At The Grave’, Padraig O’Malley, professor at the University of Massachusetts, Boston.

What is important about the interview is that it represents an insight into the psyche of the British at crucial periods in the hunger strikes, particularly at the time of mediation attempts by others, including the Irish Commission for Justice and Peace [ICJP]. read full story / add a comment

Workers in Dublin bus rejected the Labour Relation Commission's proposals on Thursday 19th March. They are now planning an all out strike from March 30th. This article firstly deals with the background to the current standoff in Dublin Bus, then examines the initial proposed 'cost effectiveness plans' issued by Dublin bus management on the 16th January 2009, subsequently it will review the LRC proposal and conclude with some reflections on how the situation will unfold over the coming months. It is based upon detailed discussions with a driver with who has been working for Dublin Bus for 35 years. read full story / add a comment

The call by Labour Party leader Eamon Gilmore on RTE radio on Sunday morning (22nd) for the Taoiseach Brian Cowan to intervene with the trade union movement to get them to call of the one day strike on the 30th of March is yet another example of how out of touch the Labour Party is with the growing anger of the Irish people to the deepening economic crisis and the attempts by the government to make working people pay for a crisis that is not of their making. As this bankrupt government prepares its emergency budget it must be meet with the full force of that anger so that
they get the message loud and clear.
