The raytheon 9 appeared in court again this morning. Their lawyers got an indication that the state was ready to proceed. The earlier charge of 'aggravated burglary', a scheduled offence under the Terrorism Act, will not be pursued. Instead, the charges are those of 'affray', and two counts of 'criminal damage'. The case will be heard before a jury at the Crown Court in Derry, but not before the autumn.
The next stage is a Preliminary Enquiry, at which the Prosecution present the charges to be pursued and outline the evidence. This will be on Thursday 5 June 2007, at Bishop Street Courthouse in Derry.
The Derry Anti War Coalition is organising a mass rally outside the courthouse on that day, calling for the charges to be dropped and urge everyone to begin making plans to come to Derry for that day . read full story / add a comment

Today marks the fourth anniversary of the Pitstop Ploughshares action at Shannon Airport in which a US navy plane was decommissioned with the aid of tools and symbols of peace.

This five-part article by Harry Browne charts the journey of the action from inception to acquittal, and in turn, paints a portrait of each of the five activists who sacrificed so much, that others might not suffer. read full story / add a comment

On a bright sunny Christmas morning, the festive community of Yeppoon on the Central Queensland coast of Australia arose to greet their day in joy and gladness, opening presents and family time together. Not so for many homes across this nation and indeed across the world as the reminders of missing loved ones taken in the grip of war that has ripped a gaping wound in the hearts of hundreds and thousands of families this Advent season. I sat alone in a peace vigil where I boycotted Christmas and Boxing day to remember those families, and those serving in this war-madness or in gaols. read full story / add a comment

Both FEIC and DAWC were today calling on the council to stand by that commitment, following evidence unearthed by the North West Telegraph that raytheon had been developing the Joint Effects Tactical Targeting System (JETTS) for the MoD, which aims to improve "lethality". During a meeting, raytheon bosses confirmed to the council that the revelations in the documents, obtained from Invest NI under the Freedom of Information Act, were true.

The workers Solidarity Movement held its Autumn 2006 National conference in Seomra Spraoi, a social centre in Dublin. The conference saw around two thirds of the membership attending with greetings sent from our comrades involved in the struggle in Rossport.
National Conference opens with questioning the reports given by various office holders, editorial committees etc. A summary of these reports follows - quite a lot of details and indeed areas involving relationships with other groups have been removed, as these were not written for public consumption. read full story / add a comment

The Scariest thing in Derry this Halloween
“Last night I watched our city stagger out of the bars and clubs. Broken bottles and cut eyes. Girls in bright clothes taunting boys with gold rings. I stood there for hours listening as it turned blunt and angrily cast around for the wrong look or a flicker of fear to attack. It lingered to jeer at a girl boking against the wall of a bank and moved on. The whole street seemed to be lurching and scowling in sullen expectation....” read full story / add a comment

Vertex Aerospace LLC, formerly raytheon Aerospace LLC, was acquired by Veritas Capital, a private equity investment firm, in 2001. The company changed its name from raytheon Aerospace LLC in June 2003, but raytheon Company (its former parent) retains about a quarter of the company.

Vertex Aerospace LLC has its headquarters in Madison, Miss. The company is considered one of the leaders in aviation and aerospace technical services, and its 6,300 employees operate in 42 states and 32 countries. About 95 percent of its sales are for the U.S. government, and its annual 2001 sales totaled about $500 million.

From 1997 to 2002, Vertex Aerospace (then raytheon Aerospace) received around $2.1 billion in U.S. government contracts.

Former parent raytheon, which maintains an interest in Vertex Aerospace, had more than 5,300 contracts with the U.S. government from 1990 through 2002 worth nearly $58.5 billion.
List of principlals shows many US government ties and conflicts of interest. read full story / add a comment
