The National Hungerstrike Youth Weekend 2009 is taking place in Tyrone from the 14 – 16 August. The weekend of events is being organised to coincide with the National Hungerstrike March, and will also fall on the actual 100th Anniversary of Na Fianna Éireann, Sunday 16th August. The main themes of the weekend will be the ‘1981 Hungerstrike’, and ‘A Century of Youth in Struggle’, with public talks, a republican tour, Na Fianna Éireann dinner dance, mural and plaque unveiling, rebel night, and the National Hungerstrike march helping bring people together and educate them on both. The weekend is expected to be Ógra Shinn Féin’s biggest event of the year, with the republican youth movement and international guests turning out in numbers to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of Na Fianna Éireann on Sunday the 16th August. They will unveil a plaque to the first national republican youth organisation, and then form up in a large Na Fianna contingent in the Hungerstrike march. read full story / add a comment

Despite the brutality of Iran’s Islamic regime, protests continued in Tehran and many other cities two weeks after the upsurge began. They are on a much smaller scale than the first days, but it is extremely significant and inspiring that many youth and other people are determined to persist even in the face of gunfire, beatings, arrest and possibly torture. The capture by the Israeli navy of the boat "The Spirit of Humanity" in international waters adds piracy to the list of crimes perpetrated by the rogue Zionist state. The boat was bringing a largely symbolic cargo of humanitarian goods to the people of Gaza - medicines, toys, cement for rebuilding of homes destroyed by Israel during its latest murderous assault on Gaza. Yesterday Wednesday 1st July around 100 Palestine solidarity activists gathered outside the GPO in Dublin to protest the kidnapping by Israel of 21 human rights activists from the Free Gaza Movement on Tuesday. Two of the abductees are Irish citizens, Nobel Laureate Mairead Corrigan Maguire and Derek Graham, skipper of the Free Gaza boat ‘Spirit of Humanity’. read full story / add a comment

The global security corporation already operates a number of prisons and youth detention centers throughout the world especially in the UK. In the UK the firm provides detention services at a number of high profile London police stations. At a Press Conference today Free Gaza say that passengers on the boat kidnapped by Israel are held in a detention centre and are not allowed to see an Attorney. The plight of Palestinians who are also incarcerated in Israel is mentioned and a request is made for world-wide help and action for them also (E-mail addresses have been removed). read full story / add a comment

That is my experience as a Protestant victim of institutional neglect. Like all sufferers, I am a victim of prejudice. It was prejudice that forced my mother into the Bethany Home in Orwell Road, Rathgar in 1941 for the “social sin” (as one cleric put it) of being pregnant out of wedlock. To add to her burden, her gestating baby had a Catholic father. Marriage in those circumstances was out, and so was I, fostered out to a dysfunctional family in Wicklow where I was beaten black and blue and (I mention it since it seems to be what Irish people are most interested in) sexually molested. read full story / add a comment
