Yesterday morning, in a pantomine the wrong side of Christmas that elicited mirth, bemusement, alarm and some head scratching from passersby but which outraged an IFPAL activist watching over his charge, two Galway City Council workmen, shovel in hand, boarded a stage prop in the shape of an old pontoon in Claddagh Quay and as if the water were a potato drill, dug and shovelled their way out to the raft; MV IFPAL 2 - proudly displaying two large placards urging voters of conscience to Vote No in the Lisbon referendum. Resisting advice, shouted from the quayside, to give up their 'aul sins, behave in decent fashion and leave our raft be, a stickler for duty, one of Galway City Councils' Quaystone Cops, instead ... read full story / add a comment ![]()

Many people are worried about the militarism implicit in the text of the Lisbon Treaty. If passed, it will effectively makes arguments for disarmament and reduction in military capabilities illegal and redundant, as each will be constitutionally obliged to increase its weapons spending. In today's Irish Times, Roger Cole of the Peace and Neutrality Alliance argues that a vote in favour undermines the fight for Irish independence, democracy and neutrality. read full story / add a comment

In 2005 the Dutch people overwhelmingly said ‘no’ to the constitutional treaty, just as the French had done some days before. In contrast to the Irish, this was the first time the Dutch people had been allowed a say about the future of Europe; and they made it clear that they didn’t like the way it was heading. Did they want to get out of the EU? No - the Dutch are big supporters of EU membership, just like the Irish, but they don’t want Europe to develop into a federal superstate. read full story / add a comment

With a headline like that the story really does deserve a place in the "other press" section, no? It's David Shayler again. For those who don't remember him, he was a MI5 whistleblower whose revelations included such delights as one of the general knowledge questions he was asked upon being recruited (put the English titles of nobility in order*) and that the Brits wanted to assassinate Colonel Ghadaffi back in the days before we spellt his name Qhadaffi. (with a Q). Since the whistleblowing, was the exile with spy girlfriend in France, and then things got juicy. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Nurturing and reclaiming our city, our commons, our communities Community Gardens are emerging throughout Dublin city. These small projects have large narratives. When we create community gardens we build alternative ways that our cities operate and can be made sustainable. We build positive spaces, social spaces and community. We address land use, workers rights and learn to collectively organise. We seed save, skill share, reclaim lost knowledge and recycle. We re establish a relationship with the cycles of life, with nature and become aware of our deep connection to our environment and each other. Community Gardens are radical spaces and the good news is that they are on the increase. Over the last 10 years the destructive development of Ireland has been driven by economic greed with little thought for communities, nature and our collective future. Our ecological foot print increased dramatically. In 2006 we were top of the list on our rubbish per capita per year of 31 countries surveyed in the EU. Our resource consumption and our waste creation had increased exponentially. read full story / add a comment ![]()
