The dispute at MTL is escalating with hundreds of people taking part in demonstrations organised by the Port Workers Support Group. SIPTU members at the MTL depot in Dublin Port have been on strike since the beginning of July, resisting forced redundancies and pay cuts. The company shipped in scabs from the North and Britain on day one to steal the dockers’ jobs, and also got a High Court injunction preventing effective picketing. On Saturday August 22nd members of IFPAL (Irish Friends of Palestine Against Lisbon) and Free Palestine Campaign spent 10 hours on the streets of Galway city providing information on why IFPAL is calling for a No vote in the Lisbon referendum as a protest against the EU's support for Israel's crimes against the Palestinian people. Almost 1000 leaflets were distributed to passersby, who were mostly supportive. The demonstration was joined in solidarity by a stalwart of the Shell to Sea Campaign, Naoise Ó Mongáin. read full story / add a comment

However the state with its deflationary policies and cost cutting measures have already begun attacks on unemployed workers. An bord snip nua has proposed numerous attacks on welfare, and the media has begun the softening up process to prepare for the attacks. On Thursday 27th August we will be having a "Close Ireland's Fur Farms" protest (instead of Tuesday leafleting sessions), outside the Dept. of Agriculture, as they are responsible for licensing these death camps. As the first draft of the new Animal Welfare Bill is scheduled to be published in September, which has the potential to ban fur farming, this will be a particularly important event. read full story / add a comment ![]()
