galway / rights, freedoms and repression / news report Thursday August 11, 2005 22:34 by Tommy Donnellan
For six hours today, Shell to Sea - their ranks swelled with activists from Amnesty International, SWP, Green Party, SP and Global Women's Strike, the latter in the formidable/venerable form of Margaretta D\'Arcy - mounted a protest/petition/info table on William Street and that over, joined the 90 minute SWP organised picket/blockade of the Newcastle Statoil Service Station and we closed the fucker down - at least until the arrival of some amiable Gardai. With Saturday's National Rossport Five demo spurring us on, a six hour stint is planned for William Street tomorrow and a further four hours on Saturday morning. On Monday night (13th December) two women facing deportation with their families spoke out at a Galway City Council Meeting presided over by the mayor of Galway and attended by supporters who packed the public seats. Together with Women in Media and Entertainment (WIME), they have campaigned publicly on their own behalf and for others fighting deportation and the devastating effects of the Citizenship Referendum. They have used the local and national media as well as street stalls, petitions and letters to government to advertise their case. national / miscellaneous / news report Monday March 10, 2003 20:01 by Global Women's Strike Working Group Galway
We had a fantastic Strike! Women from many sectors who took part said 'great', 'colourful and noisy', 'different to usual', 'everyone could speak out and each woman and man had something useful to add', 'not the same old boring speeches by politicians'. Men commented that they were very moved especially by the morning event in Galway where two women from Iraq spoke some truth about the effects of sanctions and war. Around 150 took part between all 3 events in Galway, Ennis and Shannon. Women at events organised by other sectors of the movement in Dublin, Westmeath, Belfast and Cork also distributed Strike information or highlighted the Strike. A massive and unecessary Garda presence met us at Shannon........ read full story / add a comment
