Authorities in Iran are still attempting to crush the student movement that has been organising against the theocratic state, and against imperialist warmongering and sanctions. A leading member of the Students for Freedom and Equality group, the DAB (Daneshjouyan-e Azadi Khah va Beraber Talab), Peyman Piran, is facing deportation from Norway. Members of DAB have said that Peyman’s life would be in danger if he is returned to Iran after being subjected to ill-treatment and imprisoned for anti-regime activities going back to 1999. You can help Peyman by contacting the norwegian consulate and the Refugee Council of Norway to demand that he is permitted to stay in Norway (details below).

A letter was handed in to the norwegian Ambassador to Ireland at the norwegian embassy on Molesorth Street in Dublin yesterday. Norway has a large stake in the disputed and controversial Corrib gas scheme, despite the state company StatoilHydro, having a supposed commitment to ethcial behaviour.
The letter was written by Maura's husband, Naoise, and he was accompanied by their daughter and supporters from various political backgrounds and a number of well wishers. read full story / add a comment

"The way we work is as important as the goals we reach," says norwegian state company StatoilHydro's president, Helge Lund. "We want to be recognised as a company that combines high performance with high integrity," he says.

Naoise Ó Mongain, Maura Harrington's husband, is handing in a letter to the norwegian ambassador on Thursday 26th March at 1.00PM at the norwegian embassy on Molesworth Street (just across the road from the passport office).

Protest at the Norwegian Embassy, Dublin

A scheme like the one that Shell are trying to force on the people of Erris would never be allowed to go ahead in Norway. Statoil pride themselves on working closely with communities, and as a state company, some of their profits are going to pay for pensions, schools, hospitals etc in Norway, so to some extent they are working for the public good.

Of course none of this applies in Ireland- here the people will gain next to nothing from the Corrib scheme, and those who stand against it are beaten and imprisoned.

So today, some Shell to Sea activists gave out info to people passing the norwegian embassy and the Passport Office in Molesworth Street Dublin, encouraging people to take out norwegian citizenship. It's the only way that Irish people can profit from Corrib gas... read full story / add a comment

Syttende mai (May 17th) is celebrated by Norwegians in Dublin to mark the anniversary of the signing of the country’s first constitution, and independence from Sweden.

Of all the countries in the in the world, Norway has one of the highest standards of living. To a great extent, this is because of the country’s natural resources, which are carefully managed through the state company Statoil.

Statoil owns a chunk of the Corrib gas field and is working on getting more gas from under the sea off the west coast, so Ireland's natural resources are also playing their part in raising the living standards of the norwegian people.

Once again this year, activists from Shell to Sea joined in the festivities, distributing flags and leaflets to the norwegian people and raising awareness of the fact that the Irish establishment are not doing such a good job of looking after our natural resources. read full story / add a comment

After the lunchtime talk in Trinity, Shell to Sea Activists from Dublin and Mayo will hand in a symbolic cheque to the norwegian embassy, to make the point that while the people of Ireland will gain nothing from the Corrib Scheme, the people of Norway, through thir country's part ownership of Statoil, will benefit from the exploitation of Irish resources.

The norwegian embassy is on Molesworth Street, opposite the Passport Office.

This story began (for some) on the 30th of Sept. 2005 when a Danish newspaper published a series of cartoons depicting Muhummad PBUH the prophet of Islam.

For others this story began on the 14th of February 1989 when Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini then supreme leader of Iran issued a "fatwa" calling for the execution of Salman Rushdie on Tehran radio.

& for yet others more, this story began with the Quran and that no visual images or depictions of God exist because such artistic depictions may lead to idolatry and are thus disdained. A similar position in Christian theology is termed iconoclasm. Moreover, most Muslims believe that God is incorporeal, making any two- or three- dimensional depictions impossible. This prohibition is extended to the prophets of God. (peace be upon them).

One of the most bizarre things about the whole Corrib gas saga is the fact that the Irish tax payer gains nothing from the exploitation of this resource. No new hospitals. No new schools. No new creches. No new playgrounds... We'll even have to buy the gas at the full market rate.

Yet, the norwegian tax payer, through Statoil, has a 36.5% stake in the Corrib gas field and will benefit greatly from the discovery. read full story / add a comment
