60,000 people have joined the Facebook group “Protest Against Homelessness in Ireland,” pledging to march on December 5th, 12pm at the Garden of Remembrance in Dublin. Because we need real opposition. 4. Because we could end homelessness now. 5. Because this could kick the housing movement onto a new level. read full story / add a comment

Councilors from Fianna Fail, Green Party, Labour and Social Democrats have agreed to give land at O Devaney Gardens to Bartra Capital. O Devaney Gardens was a working class flat complex on the edge of the Phoenix Park. For decades, it was run down by Dublin City Council and requests by tenants for proper maintenance were ignored. Dublin City Council officials typically neglect inner city housing complexes in the hope that they can eventually move out the residents and turn them into posh private apartments. The Fianna Fail-Green-Labour–Social Democrat coalition that run Dublin City Council complied with this disgraceful strategy. read full story / add a comment

Housing prices are skyrocketing in cities around the world. Incomes are not. Private equity firms have become the biggest landlords in the world, and the extent of the high-end land grab goes well beyond gentrification. Fredrik Gertten’s probing documentary follows Leilani Farha, the UN Special Rapporteur on Adequate Housing as she travels the world in an effort to understand why we are being pushed out of our cities, and why affordable housing isn’t defined as a fundamental human right. This screening will be followed by a panel discussion. read full story / add a comment

We are facing a huge crisis over our climate. But the Government is not allowing the Dail to vote on a People Before Profit sponsored Climate Emergency Bill that would keep fossil fuels in the ground. The main mechanism they are using is a little known and obscure legal measure known as a ‘money message’. When any law imposes a financial cost on the state, the government can attach this ‘money message’ to stop debate. However, this Fine Gael led government are totally missing this measure. How, for example could a bill to stop the issuing of future licences for oil and gas exploration impose a cost on the state? Fine Gael have killed 55 opposition bills by using this way. read full story / add a comment

This year we mark the centenary of the First Dáil. The Irish Labour Party and Trade Union Congress played a significant role in shaping the ‘Democratic Programme’ of the Dáil meeting in January 1919. Yet, much of what was contained in that document was subsequently forgotten or dismissed. The ITUC as forerunner of the ICTU played a constructive role in helping to steer Ireland towards a coherent social vision for the entire island of Ireland. The challenge remains. Following a bruising economic crisis after 2008, the lessons of economic and policy development have not been learned or applied by Government. read full story / add a comment
