SUMMARY: I arrived in Ennis without pen or notebook to support the action of Margaretta D'Arcy and Niall Farrell who protested on the runway of Shannon against the US military use of the airport. The following is a colour story of happenings on the day relying on memory only. I hope that someone else may provide a fuller report and my apologies for any errors in this report which are entirely my responsibility. read full story / add a comment

Abstract: For most progressive activists, it is a given that the military-industrial
complex is a clear and highly visible barrier to progressive social change. So it is particularly interesting to note that a number of groups involved in progressive activist education – which are held in high regard by activists – maintain strong links to military and political elites. One of the best known of these organisations is the US-based Albert Einstein Institution. This paper will provide a systematic analysis of the history of this Institution, and the key people associated with it, and demonstrate how their work is intimately linked to the international democracy-manipulating community – whose work is exemplified by the US-based National Endowment for Democracy, a group which is well-known for its support of the failed 2002 coup in Venezuela. This analysis will expose the crucial role such activist educators play in catalysing revolutions in countries deemed appropriative for regime change by transnational elites. In the light of the dubious nature of these educational activities, this paper will conclude by offering a number of suggestions for how concerned citizens and educators may counter the cynical (ab)use of activist education by political elites as a new and powerful tool of imperialism. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Charles Taylor’s sentencing to 50 years’ imprisonment on 11 counts of war crimes is undeniably momentous. However, with Sierra Leoneans still suffering abject poverty and remaining in dire need of aid, it must be questioned for whose benefit the costly War Crimes Court really is, writes EMMA PURDY read full story / add a comment ![]()

As the leaders of the global diamond industry gathered in Vicenza, Italy for the annual meeting of the World Diamond Council, Palestinians remained trapped in a surreal nightmarish existence under the cosh of a diamond-funded, nuclear-armed belligerent regime: "The Israeli forces used [taser guns] and I have bruises on my arms and legs. I saw them open a protester's mouth by force and spit in it, and they spit in my face as well. While being under custody, a police officer of Ramle district addressed both me and another female activist while being cuffed with verbal sexual harassment, threatening to rape us. I have to admit I burst in tears ." read full story / add a comment ![]()

It is ok for this writer to ask if our Fianna Fáil/Green Government are men or mice? because it is quite clear that Ireland's government is male-dominated and amongst the trash of its legacy appears the failure which we have come to know as the Blasphemy Amendment , which was an innovation by a Minister for Justice unconcerned in the state of prisons, best practices with regard to fefamation of religions or personal freedom. On July 23rd of 2009 the Irish president gave her seal to the Criminal Justice Act and the Defamation Bill, wherein groups are incentivised to take legal action against what they perceive or understand to be published or uttered Blasphemy. read full story / add a comment

Both the print and broadcast media have given a lot of coverage to the saga of Naomi Campbell’s encounter with blood diamonds, allegedly given to her by the former Liberian ruler and accused war criminal Charles Taylor. The controversy surrounds what Campbell described as a few “dirty looking pebbles” she received in the middle of the night while attending a dinner party hosted by former South African President, Nelson Mandela. read full story / add a comment ![]()

On Wednesday 23rd June, Irishman Tommy Donnellan took part in a protest outside the meeting of Kimberley Process Conference in the Hotel Dan Panorama in Tel Aviv. The conference is meeting to discuss the global trade in “conflict” or “blood diamonds”, and the protest was organised to highlight the double standard in the Kimberly Process which bans the trade in rough diamonds that fund human rights abuses but facilitates the far more lucrative trade in cut and polished diamonds that also fund such abuses – including Israel’s occupation of Palestine. During the protest, Mr Donnellan was questioned by Israeli police and had his passport and phone numbers taken down. read full story / add a comment ![]()

The Freedom Flotilla to Gaza, which includes 11 Irish people, expects to arrive at it's destination within 48 hours despite Israel's vow to block the mission from delivering much needed aid to the beleaguered coastal strip. A forum of seven senior Israeli ministers who met on Wednesday 26th May have decided that the Israeli Navy will enforce a twenty mile exclusion zone around Gaza and will arrest all 800 crew and passengers taking part in the Freedom Flotilla should they pursue their mission to break the ongoing siege of Gaza. read full story / add a comment ![]()
