In an open letter, over 340 civil society organisations are demanding that the European Union immediately halt free trade agreement negotiations with the Mercosur bloc (Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay) on the grounds of deteriorating human rights and environmental conditions in Brazil. The letter is addressed to presidents of the EU institutions ahead of the ministerial-level meeting next week in Brussels where EU and Mercosur foreign ministers aim to finalise the negotiations. read full story / add a comment

Background on the arrests and the annual Vigil to Close the SOA: On Saturday, thousands converged at the gates of Ft. Benning, in the annual vigil and rally to close the School of the Americas/WHINSEC. Over the years since 9/11, under the pretext of "terrorism", it has become increasingly more difficult for activists to engage in non-violent civil disobedience, which has been a cornerstone of our movement. CONNOLLY YOUTH MOVEMENT CONDEMN COUP IN honduras The Connolly Youth Movement condemns in the strongest possible terms the military coup that has taken place in the Republic of honduras. The kidnapping and exiling from the country of, the democratic and rightful President, Manuel Zelaya, is an outrageous affront to democracy and stinks of Yankee involvement. The Connolly Youth Movement calls for President Zelaya to be returned to power in honduras and for those traitors in the military, who moved against him, to stand down. The CYM echoes the words spoken by the Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla in denouncing “the criminal and brutal character of this coup d’etat.” read full story / add a comment |
