World boycott campaign against Chiquita which supports Coup d'Etat in Honduras

category international | anti-capitalism | press release author Monday October 12, 2009 03:33author by CIBCH - Comité Internacional por el Boicot a Chiquitaauthor email boicotchiquita at gmail dot com Report this post to the editors

we are promoting a world campaign to boycott Chiquita which supports the Coup d'Etat in Honduras. It is very important to spread the word in these critical moments and to try to help the Resistence to defeat coup participants.
chiquitaen.jpg

In response to the call made by the National Front against the Coup d’ Etat in Honduras (http://contraelgolpedeestadohn.blogspot.com/2009/08/tod....html), we ask for your help in the establishment of a PERMANENT WORLD BOYCOTT of the CHIQUITA Company that, behind the scenes, is supporting those responsible for the coup.

For further information, we recommend Nicolas Kozloff's article:

In Spanish: http://www.rebelion.org/noticia.php?id=88860
In English: http://www.counterpunch.org/kozloff07172009.html

and

John Perkins’ article:http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article23211.htm (English)

How to participate:

1) Don't buy Chiquita bananas;
2) Pass along information about the boycott to your friends, relatives and acquaintances;
3) Print the boycott logo on stickers, T-shirts, posters, flyers;
4) Publish this information on web sites;

5) Visit the web page of Chiquita's Headquarter in Cincinnati, OH (USA)
http://www.chiquita.com/CompanyInfo/ContactUs.aspx

and send them the following message:
I DON’T BUY CHIQUITA BECAUSE IT SUPPORTS THE COUP D’ ETAT IN HONDURAS

If you want versions of the logo in other languages, you will find them at:

FACTS:

On June 28, 2009, military commandos involved in the coup d’etat arrested the legitimate president of Honduras, Manuel Zelaya. They attacked his residence with machineguns, kidnapped him and took him to the US military base at Palmerola. The plane carrying the “president-prisoner” flew to Costa Rica, where he was abandoned in pajamas on one of the runways. It is a military-business coup d'etat, planned by the United States IV Fleet, which buries Honduras once again in its dark past of military dictatorships.

All of the international organizations of the American continent, the United Nations, the European Union, etc. condemned the Coup d'Etat and demanded Zelaya’s return to the Presidency of the Republic, out of respect for the will of the Honduran voters. After two and a half months, coup participants are still in power and Zelaya remains outside the country notwithstanding the unanimous condemnation of the “international community”.

This was possible because of the ambiguous and suspicious behavior displayed by the US Government which washed its hands of the matter and passed the buck to the president of Costa Rica, Oscar Árias. Rather than a negotiation, it was a trick that let time pass and delayed Zelaya’s return. The goal is precisely to maintain this status quo until November, when his presidential term of office ends, and to avoid the national consultation, a sort of plebiscite, about a possible constitutional reform that could lead to the reelection of Zelaya's Government, that is more sensible to people's needs.

So now we have new elections (most certainly manipulated) and the disappearance of the risks implied by a government closer to the people’s needs. To put an end to arbitrariness, and to put the gorillas back in their cages, the pressure of public opinion is necessary. Diplomacy has failed, and the intervention of international civil society and consumers is necessary.

We have therefore launched the World Campaign to Boycott Chiquita, one of the corporations that most stridently oppose Zelaya's government and support the coup. It is urgent to strike back at the transnationals that, behind the scenes, finance and support the coup-installed government!

They might be called Chiquita now, but it wasn't all that long ago that they were the UNITED FRUIT COMPANY, which did so much in Guatemala and Colombia as well as Honduras.
