Young people in Ireland are not as uninterested in the upcoming elections as many people might think. Instead they are finding the political system inaccessible, confusing and uninspiring. That’s the view of the SpunOut.ie National Youth Organisation, which reaches 100,000s of young people each year. According to SpunOut.ie there are approximately 500,000 young people in Ireland between the ages of 18 and 25 and according to a SpunOut.ie poll, up to 70% (350,000) of these may not be voting on Friday. read full story / add a comment

Delara Darabi, who was charged at the age of 17 with murder, was executed today in Rasht. Darabi was 22 years old. Authorities did not inform her lawyer, Abdolsamad Khorramshahi, that her execution was being carried out. According to Iranian law, lawyers must be given 48 hours notice of impending executions. “The execution of Delara Darabi is an affront to human rights values and is in bold violation of Iran’s obligations with respect to international rights standards and covenants,” said Aaron Rhodes, a spokesperson for the Campaign. “What is more, her rights were trampled in an unfair trial.” read full story / add a comment

Dublin saw a mini-Korrika run through the city centre last Saturday. Thousands of Basques participate in the Korrika which totals thousands of kilometres every two years on different routes through their homeland. This year's finished on Saturday with, according the organisers, the highest ever participation since 1981. The Basque and Irish participants in Dublin were running in solidarity and to raise funds for the promotion of the Basque language. read full story / add a comment

In February, the WSM continued its series of public meetings about why capitalism is in crisis and why working people should refuse to make sacrifices to benefit the rich. Limerick and Bray were the latest. We will be continuing our efforts to spread anarchist ideas in this vein over the coming months, with meetings planned for Drogheda, Galway, Derry, Navan, Tralee, Tipperary and Ballina. With the government's decision to introduce third level fees expected within two months, the student campaign against fees, Free education for Everyone (FEE) is stepping up its campaign across the country. A crucial step is fighting to build genuine campaigning students' unions capable of leading a mass movement to defeat the government's threat. The government’s cutbacks in education will have a drastic effect on Primary schools in Tralee. People Before Profit support local demands for their reversal. Scoil Eoin, which will have over 600 students next year, will lose one teacher as a direct result of the increase in class sizes and will face cutbacks in language support staff which will have a severe impact on students for whom English is not their first language.
