A Judicial Review brought by Friends of the Irish Environment (FIE) alleges that the Chief Executive of Fingal County Council failed to provide satisfactory explanatory reasons for granting the extension to the original decision to allow a third runway at Dublin Airport. Licensed psychotherapist, author and publisher Carmel Sheridan knows that no matter where nurses live and work, they struggle with similar issues: compassion fatigue, depression, substance abuse, poor boundary setting, neglected self-care, and high stress levels. "I've lived in the U.S. and Ireland, and many of the participants in my stress-management groups are nurses spanning every specialty. Nurses have particularly high levels of stress and burnout." Often dubbed "the invisible patients," nurses endure emotionally grueling and physically draining shifts, often with little support. Stress in nursing won't reduce until conditions improve. A coalition of Irish farmers, environmentalists, trade unionists, global justice groups and small business organisations have called on MEPs to oppose the EU Canada trade deal known as CETA. The groups co-signed a letter to members of a European Parliament committee calling for rejection of the deal earlier this week. The trade deal is making its way through the European Parliament. Today a European Parliament committee voted in favour of the deal. The final vote on CETA will be taken by the whole Parliament on February 14th. read full story / add a comment

A campaign which has called on consumers to boycott farmed salmon this year have included ‘organic’ farmed salmon because of the use of chemicals. The campaign by 10 environmental groups under the banner of WildFish.ie takes aim at the appalling environmental impact of salmon farms as well as the human health risks of this practice. The Boycott Farmed Salmon’s 2016 Christmas campaign has added the word ‘ORGANIC’ to its campaign’s name after the Minister refused to enforce the EU Regulations which require that whenever chemical medicines are used on organic products ‘treated stock shall be clearly identifiable’. read full story / add a comment

BirdWatch Ireland remains steadfast in calling for the sustainable management of Ireland's fish stocks. Our recently-published report, Life on The Edge, provides the background to some of the key issues and concerns we have regarding management of fisheries and protection of seabirds in Irish waters. With mixed outcomes from this year's December Council in Brussels, in 2017 BirdWatch Ireland will continue to urge Minister Michael Creed to listen to the science and set sustainable catch limits for all stocks. He must provide justification for any decisions not to listen to the science, including the longer-term impact on the health of fish stocks and the social and economic well-being of coastal communities. read full story / add a comment

The Irish Times headline recently ran a headline, ‘Imposing French-style wealth tax would only yield €22m. UCD sociologist Kieran Allen asked for a right to reply but received no response to his request. Here is his exposure of how journalism sometimes functions as propaganda. The story is based on an ESRI Working Paper entitled ‘Scenarios and Distributional Implications of a Household Wealth Tax in Ireland’. Fluoride addition to public water supplies is a government program started in the early 1900's when it was believed that fluoride strengthened teeth without building up in any other organ. Now that we know the brain is a target for fluoride and that fluoride ingestion doesn't reduce tooth decay, it's time for the EPA to stop playing politics, honor the science and ban water fluoridation for good. EPA has been served with a citizens' petition from environmental, health and medical groups that must, by law, be answered in 90 days. read full story / add a comment

The Department of Transport Tourism and Sport has been accused of ‘mocking’ the Paris Accord in ignoring national policy and legislation on climate change. ‘Just as two superpowers agree to the Paris Accord, our country is manifestly not on track to meet those targets’, a statement from the group said, ‘as the main elements of expenditure identified in the strategy will all lead to increased - not decreased - emissions’. read full story / add a comment

Dalradian Gold, the Canadian based mining firm, are planning to set up a gold mine and processing plant in the beautiful Sperrin Mountains, County Tyrone. Described as a potential “gold rush”, Dalradian claim their survey shows there are up to four million ounces of gold in the Sperrins. Officials claim it could produce 120,000 ounces per year for decades and tens of millions in profits. Michael Arthur reports. However, to remove the gold, Cyanide will be pumped into the mountains. This process is extremely dangerous for the public health of people living in the area and the local ecosystem, the nearby Owenkillew River is the home of the protected Freshwater Pearl Mussel. read full story / add a comment

The statement comes after NI Water’s decision to allow Infrastrata to begin drilling for oil just 380 metres away from Woodburn reservoir in Co Antrim. Shell to Sea campaigner Maura Harrington was arrested in Belmullet on Friday afternoon and jailed for 10 days in Mountjoy prison for the non-payment of a court fine of E300. It is thought that the jailing relates to a 2012 protest attempting to block construction of the disputed development. read full story / add a comment

It is time for the negotiations to stop, and the debate to begin. Should we be able to act when we have reasonable grounds to believe our health and wellbeing is at risk, or must we wait until the damage is done? Were our governments serious in Paris when they said they would do what was necessary to protect the planet, and keep climate change under 1.5 degrees? Environmental protection should not be seen as a barrier to trade, but as a safeguard for our health, and the health of future generations. read full story / add a comment

Bord Pleanala have refused a request by CHASE for an extension to the Oral Hearing date for Indavers Ringaskiddy incinerator application and confirmed that the Oral Hearing will start on 19 April at Carrigaline Court Hotel at 10.30am, citing 12 July 2016 as deadline date under Strategic Infrastructure Process. CHASE wrote to An Bord Pleanala following receipt of registered letters on 31 March/1st April advising of the hearing date, leaving just 12 working days preparation for the hearing. Previous hearings lasted 3 weeks. Bord Pleanala received over 220 submissions objecting to the proposal, each of which was accompanied by a payment of 50Euro. Objections were made by all 4 TD’s for the South Central area, including Defence Minister Simon Coveney, Fine Fail Party Leader Micheal Martin, Michael McGrath (FF) and newly elected Sinn Fein TD Donnchadh O’Laoghaire. read full story / add a comment

The European Ombudsman’s Office is to review its decision to close the file against the Commission’s handling of a complaint over alleged failure to notify consumers of the levels of water-borne toxins trihalomethanes [THMs] linked to cancers in Irish public water supplies. During the Commission investigation the Irish authorities told the Commission that THMs exceed the WHO/EU permitted parameters in 412,000 of Irish Water’s 1.5m customer base, more than 1,000,000 consumers. THMS are a group of more than 60 chemicals, including chloroform which are disinfectant by products created when water with a high organic matter – such as peaty water or excessive algae – is treated with chlorine. read full story / add a comment

Monday 22nd February, 2016 – Ahead of the 12th round of TTIP negotiations, 280 civil society organisations from across Europe, with the support of US and Canadian groups, have called on the European Commission and the United States Trade Representative to eliminate the Investor State Dispute Mechanism (ISDS) and its so-called replacement, the Investor Court System (ICS), from the TTIP, CETA and all other trade agreements. PRESS RELEASE - Friends of the Irish Environment - 17 Feb 2016 - A campaign in Europe to have Irish Water customers informed of toxic chemicals exceeding the World health Organisation and European Union safety standards has failed, according to Friends of the Irish Environment. The environmental lobby group, which specialises in the enforcement of European environmental legislation, has been told by the European Ombudsman that she cannot require the European Commission to force Irish Water to inform consumers on their bill that the water they receive contains levels of trihalomethanes above the EU and WHO permitted levels. read full story / add a comment |
