mayo / miscellaneous / press release Monday November 13, 2006 17:40 by Dr. Mark Garavan
The Shell to Sea campaign condemns the ongoing co-ordinated campaign to de-legitimise and criminalise local opposition to Shell’s project in Mayo. On last Friday, Gardai employed excessive violence against peaceful deminstrators causing scores of injuries and a number of hospitalisations. Government Ministers and the leader of Fine Gael have deliberately sought to create the impression that the campaign is orchestrated by sinister ‘outside’ forces. Sections of the media continue to propagate false and outrageous accusations. read full story / add a comment

Over the last two weeks the Shell to Sea campaign has been subjected to a coordinated assault designed to de-legitimise and criminalise local opposition to Shell’s project in Mayo. On the one hand, a large force of Gardai has been deployed to facilitate Shell’s resumption of work. Garda policing of local protests has become increasingly aggressive and is adding to tensions on the ground. Numerous incidents have been logged by monitors and will be pursued in due course. On the other hand, a concerted campaign has been waged by some sections of the media alleging that our campaign is centred on intimidation and effectively run by subversive elements. read full story / add a comment

The meeting will be held on Wednesday the 11th October at 8pm in Jackson's Hotel, Ballybofey, Co. Donegal. All Welcome. read full story / add a comment

Supporters of the Shell to Sea campaign have decided not to mount a protest at today’s meeting in Westport of the Fianna Fail parliamentary party. To do so would have been to confer unwarranted attention and respect to the gathering. This is particularly the case when it appears that despite being in Mayo no Fianna Fail minister will visit North Mayo nor have any asked to be briefed on the situation there by the Shell to Sea campaign and local people. Given the ongoing seriousness of the Corrib gas conflict, its effects on the people of Erris and that energy is a theme of the meeting, this failure by Fianna Fail is all the more glaring. read full story / add a comment

Eoin Ó Broin, noted environmental and political campaigner, and one of the founders of the Shell to Sea campaign, has vowed to cut off his dreadlocks to raise money for the Rossport Solidarity Camp. If he reaches his target of €2,000, his hair will be publicly cut on Grafton Street in Dublin on July 29th. Eoin claims he can't remember his last haircut, and his dreadlocks represent "about six years" growth. By this drastic action he is seeking to draw attention to the fact that the Shell to Sea campaign is continuing, and the lengths that people are prepared to go to resist Shell and the Irish government's scheme to install a dangerous, high pressure gas pipeline and a huge onshore refinery in Rossport, County Mayo. People can donate money at pledgebank www.http://www.pledgebank.com/cutthedreadsoff (€10) or http://www.pledgebank.com/cutthedreads (€25) or in person at Connolly Books, the Sinn Féin Shop, Barracka Books in Cork or Charlie Byrne's Bookshop on Middle Street in Galway City. Or look out for Eoin on Grafton Street or in Temple Bar next Thursday and Friday. He'll be raising funds in person. read full story / add a comment

This week sees the release of Green Nation: the Irish Environmental Movement from Carnsore Point to the Rossport 5 by Dr Liam Leonard of NUIG. The book places Irish environmental campaigns in the context of a populist 'rural sentiment' which communities under threat from infrastructural projects draw on to mobilise territorial dissent. read full story / add a comment ![]()
