On Friday (June 20th) broadcaster Ray D’Arcy and over 80 staff from Google’s European headquarters in Dublin joined forces with the Galway based charity, the SpunOut.ie National Youth Website, in what is thought to be Ireland’s biggest ever ‘free hugs’ event. The ‘Hugs for Health’ event was designed to raise awareness of SpunOut.ie and its role in supporting and empowering young people via the internet. The event saw popular broadcaster Ray D’Arcy join teams of huggers roaming around Grafton St. and St. Stephen’s Green with ‘Free Hugs’ banners, offering hugs to those who might feel like a Friday morning cuddle. The event was featured live on the Ray D’Arcy show on Today FM. read full story / add a comment

On this the 92nd anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising, Ógra Shinn Féin proudly remembers all of those who died for the freedom of Ireland. We would like to extend our fraternal greetings to all our imprisoned comrades, to their families and also to all the families of our patriot dead. As we gather throughout Ireland this weekend paying homage to the sacrifice made by Ireland ’s patriot dead, we are ever mindful of the tasks that lie ahead. 92 years ago the Easter Rising shook irreparably Britain’s colonial hold on Ireland. FDA tried to have manufacturer indicted and revoked the petition for approval of aspartame, until Don Rumsfeld called in his markers. Then Dr. Adrian Gross, FDA toxicologist told Congress aspartame violated the Delaney Amendment because it causes brain tumors. When Dr. Soffritti of the Ramazzini Institute did the prestigious cancer study showing aspartame to be a multipotential carcinogen flacks tried to rebut the study. Dr. Soffritti has now done another study even using lower doses - aspartame once and for all is shown to be a multipotential carcinogen that should immediately be removed from the market. The McDonagh/Farrell Ógra cumann in UCD kicked off the Ógra freshers’ recruitment campaign this week with great success. By today, the cumann had already recruited over 120 activists, over 50 of whom are women, with 3 more days still to go. The campaign in UCD has been well supported by leadership figures, with Caitriona Ruane, Aengus O’Snodaigh and Mary-Lou McDonald all dropping out to the Belfield campus to lend a hand. read full story / add a comment

A system of sequenced closing times for licensed premises in Ireland is long overdue and is respected worldwide as a concept, which facilitates the steady and orderly flow of people leaving licensed establishments throughout the night. Ireland's first cannabis policy reform organisation, the Centre for Cannabis Policy Reform Ireland (CCPR) launched their website and campaign this week. The group, in close association with the Colorado-based Safer Alternative For Alternative Recreation (SAFER), who successfully campaigned to legalise the possession of less than an ounce of cannabis, aim to educate the public about the fact that cannabis is safer than alcohol, that prohibition is a failure, and that a system of regulation must be put in place. read full story / add a comment
